Tyre pump/gauge
« on: May 04, 2026, 06:26:32 PM »
The tyre pressure warning came on today so I used the pump provided in the boot side compartment. All the pressures were a bit low and the pump worked well, but took me a long time to repack the hose and cable in the small space in the unit. It might have been quicker to go down the road to the garage!

I have this battery-powered Air Pump in my car (next to the NOCO GB40) and it works very well. I've used it a few times already.
Things should serve me, not me them

As I'm not partial to Aliexpress (and fortunately!) not required to penny-pinch either, I have opted for the Promate Powerpump from a local reseller:
https://promate.net/products/powerpump

YES - I DO know and am quite AWARE that it is manufactured in China as well! (isn't about "everything"?)
However, I do have a local reseller, that will support any of my warranty claims (should they ever arise) with no questions asked - and most probably shipping charges will be paid for as well!
(just try that with Alibaba!)

btw: The Promate PowerPump probably isn't the "cheapest" bit available. However, it is a very neat, sturdy, "quiet" and quite reliable part! Plus it comes with a standard quick release adapter that doesn't deflate the tyre on disconnecting.

Through (expensive!) "trial and error" phases I have come to the realization that "buying cheap" means buying twice.
(YMMV)

i bought a compressor for at home  :)  Ordered it April 8-th but due to the strike of BPOST I only received half of the order yesterday (rubber tube and a digital pump). Still waiting for the compressor... These machines at the gas station are unreliable. Often they are out of service and the other day one was finally working again (or it did not have the label "en panne"), put in 2 euros and it didn't work. Then you have to call some number ... well I am not going to do that.  The compressor can also be used for other tasks at home (tacker)

My main objection to garage forecourt pumps is that most of them (in my area at least) are no longer free of charge  or not working.  :(   Maybe the younger generation  have  no  objection to regularly making a contactless payment  of maybe 50p . For many its not real money - until they max out on all their credit cards.  To me its 10 shillings !  Plus you have to rush round  adding a few psi to all 4 tyres  before the machine times out, and it now costs you £1.

I too find the Honda supplied pump too fiddly to pack away for regular use.  I bought an 'ultimate'  battery powered pump from Lidls. But I cant recommend it. It never really charged fully. I should have taken it back immediately  but it did the job of adding 2-3 psi to 4 tyres so I persevered with it.  Recently it stopped working completely  but by now the guarantee had run out  >:( :-[     And when I went to use my old cigarette lighter powered pump that was broken as well !

Did I learn the  lesson  of buy cheap buy twice?    Nope  :-[       I bought one of these -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/257446635009

It has the advantage that if the battery runs down  mid job you can still run it  using the supplied cigarette lighter lead. (many similar devices dont have this option)   The claimed battery capacity of 18000mAh is nonsense of course , its much less than that,   but it easily coped with  adding about 3 psi to 4 tyres when I swopped back to my summer tyres  .

What the heck I thought, £18 would soon be spent on a garage forecourt (Actually I only paid £16  and this was from my ebay sellers balance . I had made about £100 from clearing stuff out of my cluttered garage     :P )

I've not had it long enough to specifically recommend it but I have been impressed  so far .Feels  solid and much better made than the Lidl one. It comes in  a tidy carry pouch  and can fit in the mk 4  arm rest box.
My IQ test came back negative

I have a foot pump but use the local shell garage, two years ago was 50p for 5mins run time
then went to £1 5mins run time currently at this time is £1-50 5mins run time,
If no one believes this its TRUE my jazz was serviced at honda dealer [have 5 year plan]
went to pick car up and the man behind desk started to tell me everything that had been done
courtesy wash etc I asked if tyre pressure had been checked reply No we don't do that its recommend
that you don't touch them unless you get a light/message on dash adding his own have never been
touched.
I forgot what I came to forget.

I used to get a £20 cashback for using the Martin Lewis comparison route for car insurance and spent it on a programmable pump from Halfords. It works ok but I don't use the 12V connector on either the Jazz or E small 12V batteries. I just bought a 5A 12V power brick from Amazon and use that from the extension I put in at the front of the garage. Getting the Honda ones out was just too fiddly.

I have a Syncwire rechargeable inflator. Small enough to fit in the glove box, accurate readings when compared to a calibrated gauge, usb outlet as well. Not the cheapest but I'm more than happy with it. The only downside is the short hose, but I bought a longer one from ePay which makes life easier when the valve is at the top of the wheel (as it generally is when I need to check the tyres  >:( )

£37 @ Amazon

I use this oneregularly, and already for many, many years (but of course only with the Jazz in "ready" ;) https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=18298.0).

Bought it at Lidl some 10 years ago, around the same time as this battery chargerwhich, never used, is gathering dust in the garage, new in the box.

The valve at the top of the wheel is a bonus for me - then I don’t have to bend down so far or kneel in the dirt!

Agreed, easier to get to but need a longer hose to sit the pump on the ground.

i received my compressor today. I little on the large side ... what was I thinking :o

Before I bought it I did research on these small handpumps but most had bad reviews. Those that had better reviews were almost as expensive as a compressor so I bought that because it can be used for other things as well plus it had excellent reviews. I wish I bought a smaller one though. 6 Liter would have been more than enough. Will test it in the weekend

For me the most important thing is the quick release valve!
(I previously had a compressor with screw-on connection that lost so much air while uncoupling I never was certain, if the tyre pressure was still at the intended level)

The Promate's snap-on / snap-off connector works effortlessly plus gives peace of mind.
