brake pads
« on: October 04, 2013, 03:15:55 PM »
hi there I got a gd series jazz a 57 1.4 se, the front pads have just 35 percent left, Honda wants £50 for the part, online you can get parts froms the likes of mintex, ferodo, bosch, pagid for roughly £15-£30, what is the closest to the Honda part?

They always want to flog you brakes, they make a fortune out of them same as the air/pollen filters - 5 minutes each to fit and a fiver from e-bay.

Any of the brands of pad you mention are good quality, I use mintex. But I did read somewhere that you need to match  pads and discs as there is a variation in 'aggresivness' of pad/disc in terms of which is sacrificial?? Honda use sacrificial pads?? I'm don't think I am making it up, but old age memory is kicking in with 60 looming next year.

There are 'adhesive' and 'abrasive' pads.  Honda use abrasive pads to give good all weather / temperature braking performance.  Pads can last 30 to 40K and discs probably maybe twice that.    Adhesive pads put a sort of coating on the disc, and disc may last longer.   But the best are probably abrasive as they keep cleaning the disc,  but the discs may not last as long.  Abrasive pads give stable performance across a wide temperature range but produce dust,  adhesive pads do not produce dust but are probably more choosy about temperature,  best all round reliable choice would have to be abrasive.

I did have a bad experience with 'blueprint' (supposed to be OEM spec, and not cheap) discs and pads,  they appeared to be Adhesive and I had nothing but trouble with them,  ended up taking them off and getting proper Honda discs and pads.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

According to this post I`m using Brembo front disks and pads and it`s dusting a lot compared to my previous Ferodo FDB777 pads so the Brembo pads appear to be abrasive.

Can you get ATE pads in the UK?  They are said to be abrasive

latest update, got my brake pads from the local shop they Delphi pads cost £20, and £15 to fit, Honda wanted £110, so quite a saving.

they abrasive pads, so as culzean noted, better all round temp wise

On the subject of brake pads (sorry for hijacking the thread).... I find the OEM honda pads don't offer much stopping power and would like to try something else. This is for a 2005 1.4 Jazz SE Sport.

Any suggestions?
