...I think it mentions that you have to complete the 2 stages within so many hours of each other. Can't remember if that was 12 or 24.
Don't forget it doesn't have to be an actual usb drive, as I used one of the 16gb SD cards from my camera and an adapter instead.

Also it made sense for me to actually drive somewhere when the car update was in progress so you're just not sat in your car on the drive :D

Your steps are spot on and should be helpful to those who haven't attempted it yet

Yesterday, I updated my navigation screen to the latest 2022-01 version. No problems and it all went quite smoothly.  so I thought perhaps it might be a good idea to run through the procedure in laymen's terms for anyone who might be having problems.

1. Go to car and insert a formatted blank 16Gb USB memory stick to the USB port, (8Gb is too small and 32Gb may also be NOT accepted, don't really know why)
2. Press Start once (without the brake pedal) to bring up the Info screen, (I found that I did not need to start the engine, although it may be safer if you have concerns about the state of the 12v battery).
3. Go to - Navigation - Settings (3 dots to top right corner of screen) - Maps & Vehicle - Map update - Start update process.
This will put a Honda file onto the memory stick to identify it. Remove stick and shut down car.

4. Go to PC, insert memory stick and start-up Garmin Express
Press - Add a Device, Garmin Express will find the identified Honda stick and add it to the directory.
5. Highlight - Honda memory stick, Press - Check for updates - Install, (install time may show upwards of 2 hours but actually rather quicker).

6 When complete remove Memory stick, shut down PC and return to car.
7 Insert memory stick and repeat stages 2 and 3, Screen will show current version and updated version, Press - Install,  Update process should take about 10 or 15 minutes,
When update is complete remove Memory stick -  Job Done.

Hopefully this procedure should help with anyone having problems
I think I've covered it all, but if anyone sees any mistakes or omissions then please shout.

Thanks for that

Keeps failing at 15%  :(

Fortunately it rolls back to the older 2021.10 version so not all lost.
Let's be careful out there !

Belay that, got it to work.

I 'think' it was because my 16GB flash drive wasn't formatted using 'default allocation'

However ...... 124% !!!

All done though :

Have not forgiven Garmin for their update that 'bricked' my beloved 1490T satnav,  others on the forum complained about the same thing, but Garmin never fessed up, when you contacted them they just offered to sell you a new satnav.  The Drive 50 which i got is crap on battery life ( about 30 minutes ) and every time I turn it off the battery is flat when I turn it back on - Garmin say 'you are not turning it off properly' even though I hold the power button and hit the red 'OFF' icon...

Sure it has more bells and whistles than older unit, but IMHO the screen is worse and the battery life is a disgrace.  When Drive 50 gets a few years older I am convinced that an update will 'brick' the Drive 50,  seems to be the way to sell new satnavs - weren't Apple called out years ago for issuing updates that deliberately slowed the phone down ? that is the trouble with firmware updates.... they can be bad or good.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

I've got nothing but praise for my DS61. Never had an issue with it, maps and speedcam for life.

Plus it's actually a 7" screen which goes edge to edge, not like TT units that look so retro with their wide frame.
Let's be careful out there !

I seem to recall that a few years ago ,by a few subtle changes to their small print ,Garmin changed their definition of 'for life' from what was effectively "as long as ye shall live and the device still works "  to something more like " for   the intended working life of the device" . ie when Garmin decide its obsolete and you've had your moneys worth they reserve the right to end updates.  I might be wrong  so its  worth checking the terms and conditions carefully.
But its still better than whats offered on the Garmin/Honda  arrangement.

I do get the impression that with so many alternative, and often better ,systems available  Garmin have  lost interest  in sat nav mapping  and are  concentrating on more lucrative gizmos.   Why else would they allow their reputation be associated with the low functionality  of some  built in systems.

My IQ test came back negative

...... and yet they have introduced a 2022 range that go up to 8" screens.

I far prefer a standalone than using a small phone screen. Phones get very hot when subjected to constant GPS use like navigation.

I've had problems recently with the voice guidance disappearing totally from the SatNav on my EX (settings at volume level 11)  running maps 2021 V1.0 (which is suspected of being a rogue 1st edition)
From postings elesewhere in forum the voice guidance appears to be back to normal following a self installation of map update 2022 v1.0.

Honda Customers service even suggested that the absence of sound for turn by turn "could be a design feature" ......confusing the Jazz with what is a limited volume output on 2019 models of CRV hybrid!

On a separate ongoing  WiFi connectivity issue the dealer is struggling to get helpful and timely responses from Honda Technical (Car been in 4 x now and they want it in again for "more Tests").
Contacting Honda Customer services produced this response: -

"Thank you for contacting Honda UK.

Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences you may have experienced with your satnav.

To continue addressing your query, please be kindly advised that our technical department is the Honda authorized dealer network and the technically trained personnel there. Consequently, they would be most qualified to assist you with the satnav issue that you are experiencing. Since you are still awaiting for a reply from Honda Technical regarding this, as stated in your e-mail, we would kindly suggest an alternative course of action in contacting Garmin’s technical support directly.

You can find Garmin’s customer support center by following the link below:
https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/

You could also contact them directly via Telephone on 0808 238 0000 (UK landline free phone) or on 03708501242 (standard geographic charges) between 8:30am - 1730 GMT, Monday to Friday.

As for the last question, please be kindly informed that the Honda UK Customer Service Team is based in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards,

I find the suggestion of contacting Garmin directly in response to Honda's failure to deal effectively with what is potentially a Honda Warranty Issue very evasive and just complicating the issue to the point that Honda can try and wash their hands of the problem.

I'd welcome other member's responses regarding any similar experiences on Sat Nav issues and their resolution?

Thanks kindly in advance.

My experience with Garmin UK on a standalone SatNav issue was pathetic.

They seem to operate from cue cards and not allowed to use common sense. In my case, some years ago, the traffic reception stopped. They wanted me to return the unit for replacement. A friend had the same issue so I knew it wasn't the unit but they were having none of it.
In the end I diagnosed the issue to a failure in the TPEG signal which turned out to be a DigitalUK broadcasting issue that they took about 2 weeks to fix. Garmin had no idea which surprised me.

On another issue the rep had no idea about MTP v mass storage mode so had no idea why I couldn't see all the unit directories and files via the PC.

What's the Wifi issue, maybe someone here might know.

From a legal point of view, your contract is with the dealer. You gave them some money, and in return they are required to provide you with a vehicle that meets the description and has the functionality specified. If it doesn’t, it’s up to the dealer to fix it. Attempting to pass responsibility off to a 3rd party (Honda UK or Garmin) is a red herring, it’s up to the dealer to consult anyone he needs to. If you’ve given the dealer ample opportunity to fix it and he can’t or won’t, you are entitled to reject the vehicle as “not fit for purpose”. Threatening to reject might seem extreme for issues that some people might consider to be minor, it depends how important they are to you. I threatened to reject my Mk3 over the infotainment bugs that bedevilled some early cars, and it certainly got their attention.

Can anyone reassure me that this is not the usual Customer Service from Honda? I am almost ready to order a new HR-V but keep seeing these comments on Honda’s poor customer service. I have to say that my own experience has not been good, I contacted customer service by e-mail to answer a few details on the HR-V and they were totally unhelpful, simple queries like tyre size etc. so why couldn’t they just answer? I put this down to lack of knowledge on a new vehicle but now I am wondering if Honda’s departure from UK has led to this poor customer service.
I have previously had Skoda’s and their Customer Service feedback has always been exemplary, I thought all car companies had similar excellent service - am I wrong? Welcome owners thoughts please.

I haven't had brilliant service from Honda - either HQ when I asked queries, or the supplying dealer.

The only good service I have had was from small main dealers I used to use for my Civic and Accord servicing a few years ago - Guildford Honda were particularly good.

Unfortunately I read an article in Autocar recently - Honda sold less cars in the whole of Europe than Mitsubishi did last year... and Mitsubishi have just pulled out of Europe :(

It's a shame - the HRV, Jazz and apparently new Civic are all great cars.

Unless sales really take off for HRV/Jazz/Civic, I can see Honda pulling out of cars in Europe. I'm not sure what their bike sales are like, maybe they will split the two and keep bikes?

Honda had a large UK HQ at Slough and they fairly recently moved to Bracknell.

If UK customer support is from Bulgaria what do they do at Bracknell ?

ColinB is spot on, your contract is with the dealer 'point of sale' and they are responsible for all defects.

I had another go at upgrading today. Used the latest version and followed the instructions listed in a previous post.
Pleased to report all "done & dusted" in 30 minutes.  :D :D :D
No idea what happened last time.
