Sat Nav Update "Problem"
« on: October 12, 2021, 08:56:56 PM »
Anyone know how to reset the sat nav system?
Went to upgrade the system today, it has not gone well! The car is a 2021 Crosstar.
Followed the Garmin/Honda instructions, car info downloaded onto 16GB USB drive, map info downloaded via Garmin Express, USB drive plugged back into car, update starts.
All goes well untill progress gets to 5%, update stops with option to cancel or restart.
Restart several times with same result, now getting error message saying map data downloading with a cancel option.
Power on and off a few times, still same error message (with and without USB drive plugged in) and in the settings menu the upgrade option has dissapeared!
The map data can't be reloaded from Garmin as it's telling me the car info data needs updating which I can't do because the upgrade option has gone.
It's like Groundhog day  :-[ :-[ :-[

We had a similarish issue with our old Civic.
Fix was a new media unit.

Not that it matters now but did you have the power on during the update ?

I know the headunit on some models goes into sleep mode after about 10 minutes to save the battery and a partial update may lockout any further attempts.
Let's be careful out there !

I had my Satnav updated as part of the standard service, an annual update is probably sufficient so no need to try and do it yourself or this kind of thing may happen

I've just been thinking about this, like you do, and I wonder ........

When I first got the Jazz I swapped my 12 year old (at least) Sandisk Cruzer Blade with my music into the USB port.

Initially worked straight away, but, out of my first 3 or 4 journeys, having played without any hesitation for the whole journey, it failed to start when I hit the Audio button at next journey start ........ silence. The fix was to unplug and replug and no problem for that journey.

I decided to kill 2 birds and I got a new micro USB that only sticks out about 1/4 inch and that has been 100% reliable.

Could the failure at a % be a not fully compatible or worn USB stick ?
Let's be careful out there !

Not relelavent to the problem. I used a pendrive that had some files already on it. Consequently there was not room to download the map files to the pendrive using my PC. I copied the files that the car had put on the pendrive to my hard disk then reformatted the pendrive and copied the car files back on to it.  No problems.
I just had the accessory power on in the Jazz during the installation. It took less than 15 minutes.

I'll lead with "this is almost certainly not going to work" but... it may be worth getting a USB extension cable from somewhere like Amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Male-Female-Extension-Cable/dp/B00NH13UFQ/ref=sr_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=usb+extension+cable&qid=1634128916&sr=8-11

Something I was running into when updating was Honda appear to have been less than generous with their clearances. As a result the USB stick I was using wouldn't quite make a proper connection. The car knew there was a drive there... somewhere... but that was about it. What was on it remained a mystery. Put an extension in and everything worked fine. Unfortunately I suspect that's likely not your problem but can't think of anything else to try other than going back to Honda for warranty repair.

There is a factory data reset option, for the Android apps. That might include the Sat nav app?

For info, USB drive was relatively new and power was on all the time. Resultant error message was cancelled which left me with a blank map screen apart from the settings etc buttons.

Now for the weird “thing”. Car was left overnight, locked (and power off of course) with the USB drive still plugged in for no particular reason. Went to use it this morning - sat nav back back to normal! Map version was still 2020.10 though so no progress there, but full marks to Honda’s self repair systems  ;D ;D ;D

...Decided to update mine last night (@22:30  ::))
Map download took about 15mins and car update took about 25mins (well I drove for that long)
All went smoothly. I'd definitely not pay anyone to do the update.
Just used a 16gb SD card and a reader and followed the on screen instructions which were minimal.

That was with Garmin express on a win10pc.
Now up to date until the next one :D

I've decided to leave mine till the spring. Just in case I have an issue.

Not the time of year to have to visit a dealer.
Let's be careful out there !

The dealers charge £45 for a sat nav update, give it a miss I think!

Did the 2021 update a few weeks ago.   Fairly old  low spec 16 gb memory stick.  Formatted it first.

Garmin express said something like 5 hours for the download but IIRC it only  took about  an hour.  But then garmin express app appeared to go to the start as if there had been no download  >:( .  So I  started  the download again but this time it only took a few minutes.

Downloading the stick to the car only took about 15 minutes I think.
My IQ test came back negative

Yesterday, I updated my navigation screen to the latest 2022-01 version. No problems and it all went quite smoothly.  so I thought perhaps it might be a good idea to run through the procedure in laymen's terms for anyone who might be having problems.

1. Go to car and insert a formatted blank 16Gb USB memory stick to the USB port, (8Gb is too small and 32Gb may also be NOT accepted, don't really know why)
2. Press Start once (without the brake pedal) to bring up the Info screen, (I found that I did not need to start the engine, although it may be safer if you have concerns about the state of the 12v battery).
3. Go to - Navigation - Settings (3 dots to top right corner of screen) - Maps & Vehicle - Map update - Start update process.
This will put a Honda file onto the memory stick to identify it. Remove stick and shut down car.

4. Go to PC, insert memory stick and start-up Garmin Express
Press - Add a Device, Garmin Express will find the identified Honda stick and add it to the directory.
5. Highlight - Honda memory stick, Press - Check for updates - Install, (install time may show upwards of 2 hours but actually rather quicker).

6 When complete remove Memory stick, shut down PC and return to car.
7 Insert memory stick and repeat stages 2 and 3, Screen will show current version and updated version, Press - Install,  Update process should take about 10 or 15 minutes,
When update is complete remove Memory stick -  Job Done.

Hopefully this procedure should help with anyone having problems
I think I've covered it all, but if anyone sees any mistakes or omissions then please shout.
