I would certainly like to try one. Honest John advises avoiding them but I would like to test drive one.

Just to add, I didn't specifically mean the i-Shift, but gearboxes of that type generally. There's a knack to driving them smoothly, but I like them - they are mechanically less complex than a conventional auto or CVT.

A lot of the bad press stems from garages not fully understanding how they work, what the diagnostics tell them, or how to use the diagnostic set-up tools properly after any work is carried out. That includes some main dealers.

Who else does an i-shift type set up?

Although I can't remember names Jocko several other makers have used automated manual i-shift type boxes and none have ever got a good write-up. One I did drive was the Smart car and that was awful. I test drove a Honda i-shift and was not impressed, with an automatic box you should not have to develop a technique to make it usable.

I have driven two cars with automated gearboxes, a Corsa and a Jazz.  They were both terrible, I wouldn't have bought either of them.  However I did like driving my Mk2 Jazz CVT.  If you are light on the throttle it keeps the revs low, it was always at the right ratio for going up hills and gave acceptable mpg.

I went to my Mk 2 CVT from a Polo with DSG. I cannot fault the Honda CVT setup; the DSG in my experience would change up going downhill (for example) if left to its own devices whereas the CVT drops a "gear" or two as you would do with a manual.
I have never noticed the slightest delay and the system is totally unintrusive and I have never thought the ratio was wrong. So far as reliability is concerned look on the site for our high miler member's comments (then compare this with the VW DSG system).
I wouldn't hesitate if I were you Jocko but hope the problems you are experiencing can be helped one way or another.

[In the UK, we only get the 1.5 in the mk3 Sport model, and only from 2018.
Ouch, that hurts. We get both gearboxes in Switzerland. Maybe the general aversion of UK drivers against CVT prohibited the CVT for the 1.5. :)

I think most big manufacturers have, or have had, their own version of it.

I've had some experience with the Peugeot/Citroen EGS/ETG, and driving wise, it does seem one of the more successful ones. As expected with PSA though, they do have problems, but are usually not serious.

There's also Vauxhall Easytronic, Fiat Dualogic and GSR, Dacia Easy-R, Ford Durashift and SelectShift, etc., etc....

I think I will probably settle for a Jazz CVT, but I would really like to try one for a few days before I consider buying. I will pop into my local Honda and speak to them. There is no way I will buy a new one though. I am saving up for my Leaf, once I have a drive to charge it on!

I don't see that as a big problem. After all, changing from a manual to an auto is a major change in driving technique anyway.

Whilst conventional autos are generally nicer (the 9 speed in the CR-V is superb), there are some disadvantages to conventional torque converter autos - not least the fuel wasted by the torque converter itself. The automated manuals can often achieve better mpg than a manual.

Modern automatics, even the one with a torque converter, don't waste fuel as there's a clutch to bypass the torque converter if he's not needed.

My old Volvo (which by the way appears to have gone to the big scrapyard in the sky, according to the MOT site) locked up above 50 mph, so that there was no slippage above that speed. It was totally seamless. Never felt a thing.

All conventional hydraulic automatics use a torque converter. There has to be some waste, the torque converter can't be locked up all the time, or there would be no point it being there.

The fact remains that automated manuals give significantly better mpg, though they don't give as good a driving experience.

Was at the doctor's today and it looks like I am going to require a left hip replacement. Need an auto before I submit to that.

I took mum in for her replacement hip at 7 o'clock Monday morning, she had to come home two hours later as the operating theatre was flooded! All that day's orthopaedic surgery cancelled.

All that preparation and getting psyched up for nothing, she was pretty fed up. She got as far as the big arrow drawn on her leg and gowning up!
