Time to start thinking about another automatic.
« on: January 19, 2020, 11:55:38 AM »
I am beginning to think it is time to start thinking about another automatic. My left knee and hip are giving up the ghost, and though I can happily operate the clutch I find that after a longish stint on the motorway I find it very painful to get my left leg moving again. At the moment I find that starting to get it mobile again before I actually need it works, but long term it is surgery or an automatic. I think I am going to have to overcome my dislike of the CVT, as it seems to be the way all small cars are going. I like the Jazz so if I have to get a CVT it will probably be a Jazz. I certainly wouldn't choose a DSG gearbox, standard hydraulic autos tend to be in bigger cars, and an EV is not practical at the moment, living in a high flat. I am thinking of hiring a CVT for the weekend, and seeing if I can live with it.

My mk2 has the CVT.

Also sports mode and flappy paddles

So it can be driven as a steady drive.
In S more responsive.
And S plus manual changes gives high speed fun.

I am sure you will get to enjoy it.

Word of advice. Completely ignore your left leg/foot.

Until you get very used to driving an auto. Just use the right foot.

IMHO a CVT box needs different 'maps' that can be changed while moving,  eg super economy, economy, sport and maybe a snow /mud mode ( although from past experience CVT are pretty good on snow especially with a fairly low powered engine. I think a one size fits all is not good, as everyone who buys a car probably expects different things.  Does Jazz CVT just have 'Drive' and 'S' modes ?

They do take a bit of getting used to but they are so much more relaxing to drive.
No left leg going up and down and your left hand doing what it should, helping to steer the car.
Make sure you use the paddles in S and D modes. You can transform how the car behaves.
Best of luck.

Actually I am finding it impossible to rent a CVT vehicle, here in Fife/Edinburgh. What I have found is that there are a lot more small cars with non CVT auto boxes than I thought. The newer Corsas use an 8 speed transmission, shared with Peugeot and Citroen. Time to think again.

@Johncb500. I drove automatics for 25 years before reverting to a manual, with the Jazz, back in 2016. I love automatics, but the ones I had were a 1.8 Carlton, a 2 litre Cavalier, and a 2 litre Volvo S40, all relatively big (and gutsy) cars.

I favor CVTs over 6-speed gearboxes in the Jazz. Having driven several CVTs in other cars I can't imagine goind back to an ancient MT. MT is for old sportscar. A dealer once told me that they sell 90% of their new cars as automatics.

I too favour an automatic over a manual. Just not a CVT.

If you can think back to the turn of the millennium. The modern Jazz has that performance of a 2ltr.

The engine is the same as its manual box. And if you need to change down to over take. The auto will as well.

If you're down in the west Midlands. Send me a message. You can try our CVT Jazz.

Or.go to your local Honda dealer. And get a test drive.

After all.you are interested in up grading

A few years ago on these forums I said I couldn't imagine getting a CVT because of the "droning" that many people comment on (OK it's not the actual transmission but the rubber band effect). I'd had a few lifts in a pal's Mk2 CVT and I thought - "not for me."

Then I changed my mind. I have problems with thigh cramps especially after driving a long way so I took the plunge and I haven't regretted it for a moment. You develop your own driving style with it and I, on occasion, use S mode and the paddles. It's great around town and, once up to speed on the motorway, cruises at a relaxed 2,500 rpm.

Definitely worth an extended test drive.

Automatics have always been the exception in UK, never been popular here..  The brain controlling a manual transmission is superior to anything car makers have some up with to date for automatics ..... although the torque exchanger on some auto boxes is a neat idea...

Maybe the 1.3 CVT is more prone to drone but the 1.5 CVT keeps the revs below 2500 during normal driving.
See: CVT 2200 rpm at 120 km/h. What about a MT? 3500? 4000?

I'm hardly ever exceeding 2500 rpm during normal driving in my CVT. Going from 0-40 mph with medium acceleration results in 2500-3000 rpm while the cars behind are loosing contact. No way, I'd like to be sitting in a MT shifting 5 times in the same scenario. Just lean back and push the throttle and take off like an airplane, very, very relaxing. In comparison, a MT is pure stress. :)
The MT is the only option I'd favor in my sportcars which are driven in a spirited manner. But in a DD CVT is my choice. But I'd choose the 1.5 over the 1.3 in the Jazz for sure.

In the UK, we only get the 1.5 in the mk3 Sport model, and only from 2018. MPG takes a bit of a dent with the 1.5 CVT, 42.8mpg against the 57.6 of the 1.3 CVT, if the official figures are to be believed.

How do you feel about the automated manuals, like the i-Shift?

I would certainly like to try one. Honest John advises avoiding them but I would like to test drive one.
