Fault code reader for iPhone?
« on: June 12, 2017, 12:48:08 PM »
57 plate GD Jazz had finally decided to throw up a fault after almost 10 years, the engine management light is on.  I need to get a fault code reader, preferably one that will also work on SWMBO's GE Jazz as well.  Lots of chatter on here re the ELM327 readers linked to Android phones, is https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01EDICW1Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=SAR5CGTDB173&coliid=I2UO9SPHZUO9QU&psc=1 the right one for an iPhone comparable device?  Or any other recommendations for iOS compatible readers?

TIA

D

I'd check the Apple store to see which software will run on your iPhone first.  On the adaptor front I have had success with the <£5 smaller blue ELM adaptor with my android.  If I've got time this afternoon I might try it with the iPad.

Been looking at the free apps available for the iPhone, quite a few but not Torque lite.  Will be a case of see which ones work.  Be great if you can see if yours works on an ipad.  :D

Pushed the boat out and went for one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B011O69946/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Needed to get something sorted and delivered quickly, will report back on how it works and which iPhone app I get to work best.

Hi jeffyjazz

We have an elm327 Bluetooth connected to an xtrons 2 din head and using torque pro

What's your issue

I believe you have to pair first

Many thanks

John

I think you have made a wise choice picking the wifi ELM327 for use with Apple products as my bluetooth ELM mini is not currently recognised by the iPad 2.  It seems Apple only properly talks to Bluetooth 4 or BLE serial devices.  It also seems many of the OBD2 / EOBD apps in the store need IOS 8 or above, so my iPad which had been running sweetly on IOS 7 will probably run like treacle once it has finished updating to the latest IOS in an hour or so.

Bluetooth is generally easier to use than wifi as the process is just pairing rather than having to change networks and possibly enter IP addresses, but Apple compatible bluetoothLE adaptors seem rare or expensive.

I can't really recommend an IOS app at this stage, but searching for OBD2, OBDII & EOBD in the store brought up quite a few possible choices although OBD Car Doctor and EOBD Facile caught my eye.

An alternative for Windows laptops may be OBD2007 Lite

Hi TG

If it helps, our ipad2 runs without issue on the latest iOS available for ipad2

I think the thing to remember is not to run too many apps - close them down if not using them

Many thanks

Curious that.

On my 2007 GD Jazz the wifi widget above works a treat, using Auto Doctor.  EML light cleared, fault was P2271 HONDA - Secondary Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Bank 1 Circuit Signal Stuck Rich.

However on my wife's 2011 GE Jazz I can't get it to connect with the car at all.  Tried numerous times, it just can't connect to the car.  Anyone know the protocol that GE Jazzes use?

Hi d3dsl

What elm do you have

I believe there are a few older versions, but the latter version (elm327) should work on both

Also, when you say will not connect to the car, exactly what do you mean

We use elm327 Bluetooth on our 2014 jazz si, pairs to an xtrons head unit, using torque pro

Many thanks

One of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B011O69946/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. When I try and connect Auto Doctor to it it goes from "initiating device" to "connecting", then looks like it's cycling through the different protocols then declares "disconnected" and does nothing further.  On the GD 2007 Jazz it goes straight in there.

I'm wondering if the ELM unit is faulty, it will connect to my Disco 3 but won't read any fault data that checked with my more specialist code reader (LR & Jag only) is actually there.  From what little I can find on t'interweb (nothing definative) the GE Jazz should be ISO15765-4, which the GD Jazz is as well, but I just can't get it to talk to the car.  >:(

Hi d3dsl

Many thanks, it states elm327

As it works fine on your gd, I would check the pins on the obd2 to make sure one is not bent or broken

If your using an extension lead, try using it without extension

Many thanks

Just had a look at pins, all good. Also using direct in the OBD socket in the car, no extension

Just noticed a small sticker on the side of it saying V1.5.  Is this too low a version?

Hi d3dsl

Many thanks

I think from memory the latter standard is v2.1 (but this maybe for Bluetooth)

Is there a reset button on the elm

Also, on your iPad/iPhone, you may want to clear cache as this maybe the issue (sorry, our elm is Bluetooth not wifi)

Many thanks

Hi d3dsl

You may find this web page useful

A quick read raises some questions, for instance, did you set the com port correctly and to elm

Many thanks
