City Brake Active System
« on: July 28, 2016, 06:32:39 PM »
The city brake system activated and applied the brakes even though there was no car in front!!!!
I had let a white van pass across the front of my car whilst stuck in traffic and when I started to pull away the brakes came on . This caused the engine to stall and alarms to sound.
Could the system be confused by the van crossing my path.
Very disconcerting !!!!

So we have another modern system that can't be relied on. At least it is not taking your eyes off the road all the time unlike the 'Infotainment' system' or should that be 'Misinfotainment' system?

Makes you wonder if driverless cars can ever be a reality except under very controlled conditions and with a 'co-pilot' human to supervise and sort stuff out - even if he is watching Harry Potter movie and the car does not 'see' a lorry in front of it LOL

How far was the van when it crossed your path?

The van passed close to the car but was clear when I pulled away

If it was the van, then it would have activated while it was still in front of you.  I think this was a glitch.

I believe the car has a , wait for it , "false start prevention system"!!

As I was pulling away at the time I think this could have been activated in error.

if you ever watched air crash investigation documentaries and have seen what can happen with the auto systems on aircraft it is sobering.  On one I watched an aircraft on auto pilot had all 3 speed detection probes (pitot heads) freeze up and because the computer got confused that the aircraft was now doing zero airspeed it did something silly and was causing the aircraft to lose height without any alarms going off to warn crew. Plane crashed into sea killing all on board and investigators discovered plane was still in flying attitude (level and horizontal) when it hit sea.

If this sort of thing can happen in aviation where millions are spent on perfecting systems and  there is rarely anything close by to hit imagine an autonomous car on crowded roads.  Being involved in industrial automation for more years than I care to remember it is pretty much impossible to write programs to cover all eventualities even in a controlled environment,  let alone the wild west which is our road system.

Us humans are better than we think we are - computers Poooh

If you were stationary,  the city brake was not active, it works between 0 and 30km/h; brakes probably were on because of the hill holder system.

As I said in my first post I was pulling away when the brakes were applied and alarms sounded.
I believe that there is a separate system which stops you pulling away if it believes there is a car in front of you.
This appears to have malfunctioned

What about when you are trying to get out of parking space and cars in front and behind are close,  do you just sit there until the one in front moves their car because car in front is 'too close' and brakes come on ? How does it differentiate between car at junction and car in carpark etc.  Seems the more 'features' and automation a car gets the more they wind you up - I just want a good engine and handling.

It depends how hard you accelerate.

Good link & explanation.
So long as it lets you park it in a single garage, I'm all for it.
