Our 1.4 GD (manual) started to develop a sound that I can only describe as water running around in pipes when I rev the engine stationary or when driving. This started to happen after the last service in the summer and when I called honda, they said it is likely to be air trapped in the coolant system.

They wanted £160 to flush the system out and put new coolant in, so naturally I told them where to go (not literally, lol), and went next door (Halfords Autocentre) and had it done there for £37.

Anyway, the noise is still there and it might even be a little worse. So I'm not sure what to do.

Has anyone had this before? Can I resolve it myself? Any help would be much appreciated!

I had this following a service and i just kept topping up the coolant so that the overflow cylinder had a slight bit of coolant in the bottom. Been fine ever since.

Air in coolant . needs to be bled.. by a garage who are semi competent (not Halfords)

Sounds like you need to find a local garage ask them to do a sniff test for any cylinder head issue -only takes 15 mins max If ok then change the antifreeze and bleed the coolant using a proper rad funnel to burp air out of the system. Not a big job but I would get the head condition checked first off.
Lets know how you get on.

Thanks guys. I called up Halfords and they told me to take it back to them for another check. Think I'll give them another chance. If it doesn't work I'll take it elsewhere.

Is there anything I can do myself to get rid of the air? Or does it need special equipment? I'm quite happy to do basic work myself so if its not too difficult I'd rather attempt it myself as I have to take time off work to take the car in and pick up.

olduser1, do you suspect it could be the something in the engine itself like a gasket or something?

To get rid of air, run the engine SLOWLY with the engine cold and the radiator cap removed and the heater switched for full heat. Then gently but firmly squeeze all the radiator hoses .This should free any air bubbles. Replace raidator cap. Drive until engine is warm.. and CAREFULLY squeeze hoses again using gloves and NOT undoing the radiator cap.

This should loosed any bubbles left.
Leave to cool . Start engine up and repeat above.

Note there will be moving parts - belts etc so do not wear any loose clothing and Take Care..

Then drive for a couple of days. You may have to repeat again.

This appears a long rigmarole which is why garages don't bother.

Note.. when doing the above , the car should be level side to side. but if the ground is sloping park it with the front on the higher ground. This ensures bubbles float towards the radiator cap.

(After changing the coolant on a Toyota Yaris diesel it took 4 attempts to clear all the air. Peugeot 106s had bleed screws on the upper hoses..)

Difficult to say without car service history and or diagnose without hearing/inspecting, but the symptoms you describe may be air lock or cylinder head issue - uncommon on Jazz.
For peace of mind I would ask a mechanic you trust to check if any contaminants in the coolant via the sniffer test its a10 min task.
If the test comes back clear then go for full coolant change + 50/50 mix of good quality antifreeze [ again if your happy
its 2 yr or less] then just add a 50/50 mix of antifreeze to the header tank then drive with heater on full check if heater blows hot. Allow to cool and add more untill max level reached. Burping the air out can be time rich so I would advise so find a local mechanic they are doing jobs all day.
The issue being how long has the coolant been low/leaking and has the engine been driven and overheated.
Another poss cause being a leaking w pump gasket , any how lets know how you set on.
Remeber hot water can give nasty burns

Yes, I currently have the same issue and have done for the last few months. If stationary and you then rev to start moving, it sounds like a toilet flushing! Sounds like I'll need to get my garage to check this out. Is it bad to the general running of the car?

Best to be sure its leaking so check & top up coolant.
TRy running with heater on full then allow to cool and rec heck the level.
Does the temp gauge go above normal ie signs of overheating? if so avoid running untill leak found.

Just a little update. I took it back to halfords and this time one of the more experienced mechanics looked at it, topped up the coolant twice and put some pressurisation/vacuum equipment on it for 10-15mins and now there is no more noise!  ;D

Good result, best to check in a couple of weeks -  take care so check level when engine cold.
Your heater should now be delivering warm air after 10mins or so driving..
Enjoy your Jazz
