A couple of articles I have read about this comment on car hire document requirements when trying to hire when abroad and that the paper copy is required in some countries.
The link says that your driving record, offences etc, will be available to download and print off but will this be acceptable abroad, in say the USA ?

I would advise keeping your paper counterpart for a couple of months at least. The DVSA, have already changed the date on not issuing a paper counterpart once, so it may change again. Evidently to give evidence of your driving entitlement you will need to be able to quote your national insurance number, so maybe make a note of it if you need to hire a car.

They won't return it if you send it off. You shouldn't need to send it off, you just quote your driver licence number.

Don't you have a card which you can carry around?  Here it is compulsary to carry your driving licence with you when you drive and there is a hefty fine if you are caught without one

Likewise car hire places want proof of a driving licence.  Mainly for insurance

Btw:  The fellow on this card is a known scammer with an improbable name

You can have a photo licence if you want one, but not compulsory,  don't have to carry paper one with you as you are allowed 7 days to turn up at local police station with it and any other documents,  police can check by your name and address (and they ask other questions like who else lives at that address and can check their database) if you have a valid licence.  IMHO photo licence is probably easier to forge than the paper one printed on watermarked and security printed paper.   South Africa is like Australia where you have a photo licence that you have to carry with you, and it changes colour as you accumulate more accident and conviction free years from bronze to silver to gold after 5 years I seem to remember, and is renewed every one or two years.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Hired a car in Rome last year from a well known renter with just the paper part of the licence. Left the plastic bit at home (accidently)!

You can have a photo licence if you want one, but not compulsory,

I agree that the old paper ones are still valid, providing all the details on it are still correct and it's still in force. Any new ones are compulsory. Change of address or anything else like that where it gets re-issued and it'll need to be chopped in for Photocard D/L.

don't have to carry paper one with you as you are allowed 7 days to turn up at local police station with it and any other documents

Don't have to carry a Photocard D/L around either. Still have the 7 days to present at the police station of your choice. Need not be the local one. (I'm sure the plod would love it if you had to have it on your person at all times, but that would be a back-door ID card and a lot of people would be raging.)

IMHO photo licence is probably easier to forge than the paper one printed on watermarked and security printed paper.

A Photocard D/L has it's own security features. My opinion is that they are both equally forgeable. Not something even worth trying as the plod check the database. Might be worth it (in the opinion of the holder) for lesser crimes such as buying booze and fags down the shops.

I hired a car in the UK 18 years ago without a licence. Europcar just got on the premium-rate DVLA hotline. Job done.

Now, when are they planning to put a Butcher's Apron on the card?
