First Jazz Problem

Having owned Jazz's for nearly eight years and many thousands of miles I have had my first component problem.
I currently run a 56 plate CVT and have had a brake caliper seize.
The first indication of any sort of problem was when I noticed that the fuel consumption had worsened slightly.
The first warning came when the car was in for it's window switch recall work during which a 'safety check' was carried out and I was advised that the front left brakes were binding slightly but not serious.
On getting the car home I checked both sides for binding and heat and found nothing wrong.
A couple of days later as the speed built up I got a loud low pitched rumbling noise and effect. I stopped and found that the left front wheel/hub was very hot.
I took the car to my son's workshop, where he runs a vehicle repair business, and he diagnosed a sticking brake caliper.
The caliper was replaced, with new pads on both front wheels and problem solved.
Cost wise it is apparently as cost effective to replace the caliper as opposed to attempting to strip and clean the old caliper which may not be recoverable anyway.
I guess the other side will go now !

You mean to say you've never had a water leak problem?

Ive had no real problems since new. Most reliable car I have owned. No money spent other than servicing. Which got me thinking, how many other jazz owners out there who have owned it from new with no problems?

I think from my short experience in Jazz ownership, having read up extensively on the car, you will be in the minority.

Since I bought this one I've already done the wheel bearing, egr and now all this weekend, the leaking into the boot/footwell.

I used to have an FRV before, excellent vehicle although 2L petrol was thirsty - that was faultless. I also owned a diesel Accord for 7 years, had infamous ABS modulator failure, managed to get Honda to replace FOC - got rid of that because the manifold cracked- yet another Honda design flaw.

Aside from their design flaws etc, I do have an affinity for Honda, because generally they're very reliable.

Sticking brake calipers can be due to corrosion.  Although Honda's engineering is very good, it is not 100%.  That has yet to be invented.  I think it will wait until self-healing modules are introduced

The 1.6 Ltr Civic I had for eleven years from new had an air con condenser (stone through it), apart from routine service and normal items such as tyres and a battery that was the only problem I ever had with it, just hoping the Jazz is as reliable.

I think I've basically inherited the previous owner's problems that he didn't bother fixing. I heard the bearing when I test drove the car, but knew they were easy and cheap to repair, so wasn't bothered.

I'm hoping now I've ironed out these issues the car will be solid - I think this wee car has the quietest engine on idle I've come across, its almost silent when at temperature.

Good to see some activity on this site for a change.

59 plate EX. No problems so far. Drove in the rain with the bonnet ajar once  by mistake and after I had stopped the display gave all sorts of errors and the car wouldn't restart. OK after a 15 minute wait. Battery went flat while waiting for someone with the radio and sidelights on for 20 mins.

Hello VicW,

Unfortunately my first Jazz problem - also a seized rear brake caliper happened on Saturday last weekend at the beginning of what was to be a 500-mile return-trip, so very luckily it happened at the outset of my journey*.

Problem became apparent when slowing to a stop, slowing quicker than expected. Offside (right) rear wheel was warm to touch after only a very short (1-mile) journey into town. Found that applying a relatively heavy braking force, and vehicle would veer to left.

*Local Honda dealer (Sytner Gatwick) arranged a Courtesy car to allow me to continue my journey, so a big 'thank you' to them for their quick response.

However, the problem for me is that I've only had the car for 1 Month, purchased from above Honda dealer as an Approved Used Honda (Jazz 1.4 SE 2006, 58000 miles), and the Dealership have had to submit a detailed report back to Honda in order to claim for the work to be undertaken under the Approved Used Warranty. It transpires that the sudden failure is due to corrosion of the piston, and there is currently some doubt that the Approved Honda Warranty will cover this, and authority to order parts / undertake work hasn't yet been received (it's now Thursday).

I'd be grateful whether any other Jazz owners have any experience of this situation (particularly for corrosion issues under Approved Warranty), as my understanding on purchasing the vehicle (having not read the small-print in detail - yet) is that the Approved Honda Warranty covered the vehicle's main components and systems with the exception of consumable parts, such as brake-pads, battery, tyres, exhaust, fluids etc.

Not a very good start to Jazz ownership thus-far!

Hey Paul,

Sorry you've got issues so soon into ownership.

I've had dealings with Honda before regarding extended warranty items etc and their response can be varied and down to how the dealer reports the fault to them. It also depends on Honda service history.

However in my opinion, with only one month of ownership and paying top price at a dealer I'd be making a lot of noise about this. Pressure them by calling for updates. You may also mention you may need to consider your consumer rights to reject the vehicle.

After only one month's ownership resolving the problem is 100% down to the dealer - not Honda.
Sale of Goods Act, with its consumer rights will protect you.4
Tell the dealer you INSIST on their rectifying  the fault right away - whether they are recompensed by Honda (or not) is not your problem!
