Tyres for less road noise.
« on: November 06, 2013, 10:10:06 AM »
Having recently bought a Jazz 1.4CVT, 02 plate, I would like recommendations for replacement tyres which are of decent quality and transmit the least amount of road noise.
Currently fitted with Continentals.

I find Michelin ENERGY excellent for low fuel consumption and noise.

If you have access to Costco they currently have a very good deal on Michelin tyres,I don't know current prices, but last time I checked it was about £50 ish per tyre, deal lasts about 3 weeks.

The Michelin Energy I have are incredibly noisy on some surfaces. I will replace when worn with quieter.

I thought I had gone deaf when I replaced Pirelli with Michelin energy savers.  When testers complain that some cars have more road noise than others I wonder if they even check which tyres are fitted ?

All down to suspension set up, road surface/smoothness, type of driving, tyre pressure. Michelins get the support above, but you could try a soft sidewall tyre such as Uniroyal RainExpert, which seem to get a good review for noise or they have a new Uniroyal RainSport 3 out which scores well.
Generally, harder compounds will generate more noise, hence Pirelli being noisy and Chinese ditchfindes making a real racket.
I use Avons (they came with the wheels) and they are quite reasonable, however my winter tyres are very quiet and comfy - they go on soon.

you didn't mention tread pattern which is probably the biggest producer of noise - Michelin energy savers probably have the most supple sidewall of all current tyres which is where the low rolling resistance comes from,  which also makes them reasonable winter tyres  - when I had them on my GD i never got stuck,  and my wife Jazz with Michelin ES tyres  has driven past other stuck cars on the icy hill out of our estate and then stopped at the top and gone back to ask if the (men) if they wanted a push - bet that went down like a lead balloon !!

My Civic is not so good in snow, mainly down to more power and wider tyres.

I once won some Firestone All Road Hazard tyres in a competition and put them on my wife's BMW 318ti.  They used to sing over 100km/hr, a really irritating noise.  I first thought it was the wheel bearing and took it to the tyre place, who also do exhausts and wheel bearings.  They confirmed right away it was the tyres.  Damn things lasted for over 3 years.  The Michelin "Primacy 3" tyres that replaced them were a breath of fresh air, almost inaudible

Yes you are right, tread pattern is a big factor, I once made the mistake of buying some of those chevron pattern tyres, quite dreadful, had to go early.

Last time I checked you couldn't get any Michelins in 185/55/16
that size is severly limited
