Whistling like sound at low speeds
« on: February 19, 2013, 02:58:10 PM »
Hi

I own a 2003 Jan Honda Jazz 1.4 . Recently i noticed a slight whistling like sound come from somewhere which is more audible at low speeds. The sound comes up once you have driven the car for some distance. Is it something do with brakes ? Any solutions worth trying at home before taking to garage ?

regards
JR

is the noise speed related.. try taking someone with you to see if they can locate where its comming from.then it may give you a starting point

in my case it was rear wheel bearing, started after hitting pothole or kerb, whistling appeared/disappeared randomly, after turn-ins etc. failed mot, replaced, now after half a year driven into something again whistling again occasionally :)
to diagnose wheel bearing need to jack up each wheel and rock it checking for play, and listen while rotating
might be something else though

have replaced rear wheel bearings on two Jazzes and would describe the noise as a moaning rather than a whistling.  Also could not detect any play in bearings and very little noise or roughness when spinning the wheel while it was off the floor.   Best take grease retaining cap off the hub and put the blade of a biggish screwdriver onto the end of stub axle,  press the handle of screwdriver into your ear while wheel is spinning and you will hear any roughness loud and clear.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Did MOT and service. Seems like the sound is coming not from bearing as they are fine.
Its from the brakepads. Anyway to get rid of that (DIY?)

just a thought.... are the discs hot afterwards? i've just had to rebuild a brake caliper.... new piston.... and while you've got the pads out, you could copper slip the back of them.

Check the brake pads for wear. The sound may be from the low wear indicator which is built into the pads.
