Brake Pad Wear

Recently my Honda garage reported that both front and back brake pads were 70% worn.
    Firstly I always thought that the front brake pads bore the brunt of the overall pad wear and secondly can anyone tell me at what % of pad wear, do they start 'screeching' as per Page 298 in the Handbook?

I`d say at 80% worn pads you should hear the acoustic wear indicator or when 2mm left on the pads.

You're quite right; the front pads do most of the work and wear out much faster than the rear ones. Also, as you're obviously aware, there is a very effective acoustic warning when the pads are approaching their wear limit. From your other post, I see that your car has never had any of its pads replaced, so it's highly unlikely that both front and rear pads are worn to the same degree. I would go so far as to say that the figure of 70% is something they've pretty much just plucked out of the air. So, ignore the avaricious screeching of the Honda dealer and wait for the much more helpful screeching of the wear indicator; then, go to a local independent garage with a good reputation and have the pads replaced for about half what Honda would charge.

I don't feel particularly inclined to use a Honda dealer for any servicing unless, for some obscure reason, it is neccesary!
In my experience after market brake pads are usually absolutely fine these days - they have to be of a certain  quality and standard anyway.  My local Garage guy always does a top notch job of all our servicing and actually was one of the people who recomended a Jazz to us
yes - when braking the weight is transfered more to the front (the stopping edge) and so the front brakes will take around 75% (ish) of the load.
These days Asbestos is not used in any brake linings or pads and the newer materials wear harder on the discs - so expect to change the discs more often - maybe every 3  sets of pads....depending.

IME based on a sample of my last 2 cars, disks usually get changed every 50K miles approx or about every 2 sets of pads. Though a lot depends on your driving style.

I have had a look at mine and the shop's service records.  Front pads seem to get replaced every 60 000km (about 40 000 miles), the discs themselves about 200 000km and the rear brakes also 200 000km

The distance the pads will do seems to be inversely related to the size shoe of the driver.  We have one lady rep who always wears sandals and drives barefoot all the time (quite common in SA).  She used to get the best fuel mileage and also made the brake pads last the longest, and she was not a small woman.

I've changed mine at 86000 km - front one.
Before that I heard strange sounds when driving downhill and breaking, otherwise it was OK.
Brake pads were eunevenly worn - more on the edge.

I am a driving instructor and my Jazz is my tuition car, so its spends a lot of time doing manoeuvres, emergency stops under the control of novice drivers. It is nearing its 3rd service, currently at 32800 miles and still on its original brake pads, and I am not expecting brake pads being required at 37500, but realistically would expect to change the front pads at 50,000 miles.

I have only ever had to change brake pads on any car I have driven when it was previously driven by someone else. If I drove it from new, I would drive over 75k miles without wearing the pads down more than half way.

On cars which someone else had driven for typically 20-30k miles, I found I had to change pads or disks after around 50k miles.

I drove a Mercedes 260E for over 80k miles in 2 years and never had to have any work done on the brakes. (Tyres were a different matter).

I try to drive smoothly (but fast) and anticipate  so reduce the need for braking. In modern traffic, it's more relaxing .. and no slower.

Why not get them checked at Kwik Fit and if they need replacing get the quote.  You can use this under the Honda happiness and hopefully get them to match it.  At Kwik Fit they did use to give you a lifetime replacement cover, providing you owned the car.
