Brake lights still work with ignition turned off
« on: December 12, 2011, 08:37:36 PM »
Hi

Just parked up my Jazz and turned the ignition off and took the key out , for some reason I pressed the brake pedal and the rear brake lights still work when the pedal is pressed. Is this normal or have i got a fault. left it for 10 mins gone back out and its still the same, could not find anything in the user manual about this. Can anybody put me right on this?

regards

All my cars have done this apart from my 2002 Mk2 Fiat Punto. In my experience, it is unusual for the brake lights not to work when the ignition is off.

Richard

That was fast, never noticed it before, so its a normal feature then? just worried about the battery draining etc.

I noticed this too, appears to be mainly Japanese cars that do this.

Certainly is brapford! I'm not in the habit of applying the footbrake when the handbrake is on either. But, I just brushed my foot against the pedal and 'Bingo'!

I was surprised to find you could leave the side & headlights on. My previous car, a Fiat Idea, had quite sophisticated electronics by comparison, one neat touch if you had windscreen wipers on and selected reverse gear the rear wiper came on.

Yes, you are right geoff, the rear wiper does switch on in reverse gear whilst the front ones are on. This is only on the GE though, my wifes GD does not. My 04 civic used to switch on too when i was reversing... nice touch.  ;D

The electric windows and sun blind should also still work with the ignition off for up to 10 minutes as long as the key is still in.
