Steel Wheels (KFZ) and Honda Wheel Nuts
« on: November 24, 2011, 02:47:50 PM »
I am thinking of buying some wheels for Winter use and decided to contact the KFZ UK Importer for further information.

My concern related to using my existing wheel nuts used with my Honda alloys with the KFZ steel wheels.

KFZ technical department told me that it would be necessary to purchase new wheel nuts for the KFZ Steel Wheels as the Honda ones were not suitable, they stated that "you need a radius seated nut with these steel wheels".

They did say that they could not supply me directly as obviously they are wholesalers but www.wheelsnthings.com will be able to supply them.

Wheelsnthings also have a presence on eBay but have not had time to check whether they have the wheel nuts on sale there at present.

Hi
I bought my steel wheels from here http://www.mytyres.co.uk/Steel_wheels.html
The wheel nuts on my alloy wheels fitted the steel wheels with no problem. Jazz 2012

Hi John, the Honda wheel nuts have a 60-degree taper on them, the radiused nuts are an entirely different shape check the following website:

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpecific/T3/info/mods/alloys/altwhls.htm

I would rather follow the advice of a UK Wheel specialist, if memory serves me correct a purchaser of some steel wheels from 'mytyres' contacted customer services in Germany seeking guidance on the correct wheel nuts but the advice was not forthcoming.

You said that the wheel nuts from your alloy wheels fitted the steel wheels with no problem, but if I buy the steel wheels then radiused nuts will be fitted to avoid any possible insurance problems for having wheel nuts fitted that are not as recommended by the wheel distributor.

This topic has made me wonder about the wheel nuts fitted to Jazz alloys being suitable also for the optional 'skinny' spare wheel?

Am I just being a worrier?

Honda would ensure that the mating surface (seat) of their 'Spacesaver' wheel matched the profile of the wheel nuts used with their alloy wheels.

The problem only arises when using the non OEM wheels mentioned with the Honda 60-degree tapered nuts, this can result in damage to the wheel and the wheel will not centre correctly on the hub.

Hi
Had me worried for a moment then. I have just taken a plastercine "cast" of the stud hole in the alloys. There is a definite radius not a taper. I will take a nut off tomorrow and double check but I am sure that I noticed a radius on the nuts when I fitted the steel wheels

I would be interested in the outcome John!

If I buy the steel wheels will use the radius wheel nuts that come with the wheels for peace of mind as recommended by the distributor.

Although I am further confused by a seller on eBay who is advertising radius wheel nuts for Honda alloy wheels:

Also included are some interesting drawings of various types of wheel nut.

I checked with ny Honda dealer some time ago about the use of the alloy wheel nuts with the space saver spare. He said that there was no reason not to use them.

The space saver wheel nut 'seat' must match the 'seat' of the alloy wheels hence the advice.

It would appear that the radius nut seats can vary, for example McGard who make quality sets of wheel nuts have a range of radius nuts in seat sizes R10, R12, R13 and R14, their recommendation for the Honda Jazz 2011/12 is the R12 radius nut.

I can only assume that the KFZ steel wheels radius nuts differ from the R12 size and that is the reason they said not to use the ones already fitted to the Honda Jazz and to use their wheel nuts intstead.

UPDATED INFORMATION ON WHEEL NUTS

My original posting regarding Honda wheel nuts and KFZ steel wheels was based on information given to me that the original wheel nuts fitted to my car were 60-degree taper ones and hence the response I received to my query with Wheelright, they correctly stated that if the wheel nuts were 60-degree taper then I would need radius wheel nuts.

I have just received my KFZ wheels and on examining the nut seating it is obvious they accept radius wheel nuts therefore until my tyre fitter removes my wheels I do not know for certain what type of OE nuts are fitted to my Jazz!

So to clarify if you already have radius wheel nuts on your Jazz they are fine to use with the steel wheels and my apologies for any confusion that might have been caused. :-[

FURTHER ADVICE FROM MY TYRE FITTERS!

I dropped my tyres and wheels off at the tyre fitters this morning so that they could fit the tyres to the wheels and arranged to call back later so that they could remove a Honda wheel nut to examine and try with the KFZ wheel.

On returning they removed and tried a wheel nut against the 'wheel nut seating' and said that they were not happy with the pairing as it did not in their opinion  'seat' properly they advised me to obtain the correct wheel nuts to suit the steel wheel.

Also spoke to the supplier of my wheels this morning who in turn had been in contact with the UK distributor and a set of genuine nuts for the KFZ wheels are being sent out to me, in the meantime my wheels are being stored at the wheel fitters until the nuts arrive.

Will keep you updated on any further progress.

FINALLY MY WINTER WHEELS HAVE BEEN FITTED  ;D

On Wednesday I paid a further visit to the tyre fitters as I had received some 60-degree taper nuts so that they could try them against the steel wheel, I don't think they were impressed with this pairing!

Today I returned and requested that they fit my wheels using the Honda radius nuts from my OE alloy wheels as this was the correct pairing seeing that the steel wheel had a radius seating, the problem was that all the steel wheels they had encountered so far accepted the 60-degree taper nuts hence the concern.

There are sellers on eBay who are advertising the 60-degree taper nuts for use with Honda OE alloy wheels, if you want to see what happens to the nut after being used in place of the correct radius ones just read an American forum posting and scroll down to see the condition of the nuts:-

http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2341620

They also have an excellent forum FAQ covering wheels nuts and tyres etc which is worth checking:

I have done a lot of searching on the web over the last few days and nights seeking information on wheels and nuts and by accident came across a UK Honda dealers site which has an excellent online catalogue of Honda parts including sectional diagrams unfortunately it only covered models to  2009:

http://www.hondaoriginalparts.com/honda_car_parts_catalogue_C01.php

I just checked it as I especially wanted to see what fixtures are required for securing a spare wheel in the Jazz boot, the dealer is Lings Honda.
