In any way honda jazz GE better than GD Jazz?
« on: July 10, 2011, 09:14:14 PM »
Hi
can anybody discuss how good is the new jazz known as GE to the first and only original GD jazz.
I really cannot find a good advantage of GE to GD in any sense.(in any angle)

Stiffer body structure which means better NVH.

Safety will probably be better too.

Slightly larger interior, and more powerful engine, which is also more refined in my view.  I think it is also cheaper to service, although I'm on the 5 year £550 deal which makes it hard to compare.  The road tax in the UK is cheaper because of lower emissions.  Additionally, I value the extra boot storage space under the false floor, although I recognise that this means doing without a spare wheel.

Does it matter that GD jazz are at some point directly made in Japan, than the newer jazzes are Swindon made?

The GE version is slightly larger inside,is slightly quieter, slightly less harsh on the road, has slightly more comfortable front seats and has a much better engine .
It is more powerful, more flexible and more economical.
Unforunately it was, until recently, only available with the appaling i-shift automatic box not the CVT version.Honda have now remedied that and the latest Jazz is better still with the VTEC engine and CVT gearbox making an excellent combination.

The difference between the i-DSI and VTEC is not as clear cut as it seems!!  it all depends what you want it for, mainly around town or mainly highway driving.  It is easy to think the 8 valve i-DSI is a 'low-tech' engine when in fact it is very advanced.  The move to VTEC was not done for fuel economy reasons but the call from Jazz buyers for a higher power output. But you don't normally get more power by using less fuel.  I have had various Honda VTEC cars and also GD Jazz, and although the VTEC engine is a beauty, do not write off the i-DSI.  Honda is justifiably proud of its engines, and would simply not fit a bad engine (they don't make one) or an unsuitable engine to any of their cars.  The i-DSI is a really sweet engine, it runs out of puff a bit over 4500rpm, but for normal everyday urban driving it is tractable and willing from low revs.

Read the review below, Temple of VTEC Asia (TOVA) is a great site for anyone interested in Honda products.

The i-DSi is
1. Chain-driven cam - no belt breaking worries (not that the VTEC is known for it)
2. 8 valves so 8 fewer to pit/go wrong (again not that that's an issue with a VTEC)
3. Twin-spark which helps the low speed torque/efficiency

I think by anyone's standard its a great engine. You're only comparing it to one of the world's best engines. I'd never have an issue owning any Honda engine.

8 valves helps low-end torque too.

The vtec needs to be revved hard, which is probably not the kind of driving most Jazz owners do!

GE seats are way better.

I've had a GE 1.2 SE since Monday as a courtesy car from the body repairer. Here is what I think after spending some quality time with the car next to my 2007 GD Sport:

What's better:

- Performance - even the 1.2 feels significantly quicker
- Steering - sharper and more direct
- Ride & handling (both on 15" wheels), especially the ride.
- Refinement - it's so quiet!
- Looks
- Front visibility
- More space
- No need to move the front seats forward or remove the rear headrests to drop the rear seats.
- Gearchange - already a strong point in the GD, now even better.

Not so good:

- The cabin materials look and feel cheaper and more so next to rivals like the Polo and Fiesta. That said, it's a lot better than the cheap and nasty Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia.
- The forward A-pillars make it feel more like driving an MPV
- The instruments are not as easy to read or as attractive as the backlit dials on the 2004+ facelift.
- No spare wheel as standard
- The i-VTEC engines doesn't feel as torquey as the i-DSi

Sitting on the fence:

- Dashboard design - I like it, it's more modern but it's missing the elegance and simplicity of the GD's.
- The service reminder - could be more trouble then it's worth for certain mileage drivers?

It's interesting that you find the GE courtesy car ride so much better than your GD.  My GE is from October O8 and I think the ride is poor, so perhaps the latest GE does indeed have some ride improvements, as claimed.  I must try one!
