Idle Start/Stop "Eliminator" UPDATE!
« on: October 29, 2026, 04:19:10 PM »

Hey guys.

So since getting a 2013 Honda Fit, I got to know the the idle start/stop feature. True marmite situation.

I was wondering what people think of it? I heard a lot of people hate it and press the off button at the start of the journey. Of course it resets every time the engine is started. At first I hated it because even the wheel seems to lock. Never was it slow to respond though, but it wasn't a feature I was used to and at first I hated it.

It recently started to bother me less, as I now know how to break properly, to make sure it doesn't activate, and in my opinion isn't such a big deal I think. I just dont know whether the metallic sound is normal when the engine starts. It doest sound overly unhealthy, but I am not so used to it.

Someone recently mentioned these start/stop eliminators. A little dongle that plugs in behind the button, and self presses a few seconds after engine is started. Has anyone had experience with them?

Are they beneficial, any long term issues to the battery module in the boot, if it is never used?

Or would people recommend having the feature on?

Ive seem some for £80 via YouTube sponsored pages, but Ive also seen some for £5 on Ali express.

what do you guys advise? and do you advise them at all?

If yours is a 2013 car, you might get a more knowledgeable audience if you ask your Q. over on the MK2 part of the forum (This is the Mk 3 area).

Speaking personally, I have no issue with the start-stop system on the Mk 3. It works unobtrusively in the background, and Honda have built so many fail-safes into it that it won't stop the engine if there's the slightest chance it won't restart. Even if I didn't want it to work, I'd be very wary about installing some 3rd party gadget into the engine controls.

I'd suggest studying different parametrers preventing start-stop to function. I have manual AC and the ventilation direction knob has a microswitch preventing start-stop when the knob is turned towards windshield. I use that to keep engine running, but also it would be easy to connect the microswitch wires permanently.

Forgot to comment on that eliminator. It is just manipulating that switch signal, so I don't see much risk in trying it. And it's not a huge cost either.

That's what I suppose it to do. I have been joking of a robotic finger to push the button after every start. That does the same electronically between the wires.

My solution is described post #126 in my thread.
https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=12071.126

Most of the time that ventilation adjustment is fine and I can drive weeks without need to turn the knob and thus start/stop stays inactive.

I couldn't figure out a combo of controls to make it not activate, apart from its actual button. No matter what im running, it activates.

You do have manual heating and cooling, right? If you turn the mode control knob clockwise to direct all air to windshield, the engine still stops?

Curious. This must be a difference between the Euro/UK spec cars and whatever yours is. On my car, turning the mode control fully clockwise to the screen demist position inhibits the idle/stop so it doesn't stop the engine. The multi-function display gives an erroneous indication that the A/C is inhibiting it (it isn't, the idle-stop co-exists happily with the A/C if the mode control is in any other position).

Mines a Japanese import. Japan 2013 model, while more similar to UK's 2015 model.

I noticed a few days ago, that when I stop at the traffic lights, of course the idle stop kicks in, and that stops the heating, so yes, the fans blow, music plays, lights remain, but heating stops. If you are in traffic, it will get annoying once the freezing temperatures kick in. So thats another reason for me to consider the stop start eliminator. Ive started to manually switch it off now otherwise it'll take even longer to get a warm car.

UPDATE! So after lots of thought, and driving around with colder temperatures, I decided I might try and install the eliminator. I recently noticed that the engine switches off and that also turns off the heating, and because I live by a busy road, I am in traffic for the first 10-15 mins of my journey to work. I need heat in the car. It's cold. and yes, I can press the button at the start of every journey, but then the idea of it auto pressing itself also sounds great. So I decided to install this £5 idle start stop eliminator. Honestly didn't think it would work. but it works. I start the engine, and 5 seconds later the button presses itself. I am quite excited. I know it's not rocket science, but I feel like a hacker. a little dongle that plugs in from the button to the original cable. Happy I didn't buy that £80 one that a YouTuber is promoting. If thinking about it, it's not that complex of an invention, and I can always reverse it by simply pressing the button and it goes back to normal.
UPDATE!
