Replace rear drum brakes with discs / Rust problems
« on: October 12, 2026, 12:50:40 AM »
Hi.

Bought a Jazz 1.2 2013, while the outside and inside is almost rust free, under the hood things arent great with a lot of corrosion and oxidation (this poor guy lived whole its life a few meters from the ocean). Some parts look very bad:

Front
Braking system, suspension, subframe, arms

Rear
Axle beam, suspension, braking system

Went to a couple places about the corrosion, while all said that structure shouldnt be compromised, and all it needs its a good cleaning and treatment, the braking system should be taken for.

My idea is to replace with used parts (good ones) some of the structural parts, braking system, and maybe suspension.. then make a good anti corrosion treatment.

I did find a good deal on axle beam with complete braking system, but with discs.. the Jazz i own has drum brakes in the rear.
Will it work without any modification or is not adviced? (ABS, requires modifications, etc)?

Just out of curiosity, i have attached some rusty pictures.

Thanks!

It can be done but it's rarely a straight bolt-on. The handbrake cables are usually different for discs and sometimes the pipes or flexi hoses too. The bigger worry is brake balance. Cars that came with rear discs can have a different master cylinder or ABS setup, so the rear could end up doing too much or too little. In the UK it's also a modification you'd need to tell your insurer about. Drums are cheap and work well on a Jazz, so I'd probably renew the rear brakes like for like and spend the money on rust treatment.
