Space saver
« on: March 05, 2026, 04:57:45 PM »
I have been looking for a space saver for a 2024 jazz Crosstar and have been offered one from a Rover.
On the rim it says 31/2 Jx15,H2x45, 1420, RRC116520.
Tyre size is125/80/15,
It is 4 stud, 4” stud centres,
I want to know for sure before buying it
Thanks no

I bought an unused Rover spacesaver from a scrapyard for my Mk3. I would check the date on the tyre as they don’t last for ever even if unused. I think the same dimensions apply to the Mk 4.

I no longer have it as it was well over 10 years old when I swapped the car for a Mk4. I no longer carry a spacesaver. The date of manufacture is in a box on the tyre wall - it consists of 4 digits. The first 2 are the week no and the last 2 the year, so 1420 on yours means week 14 of 2020. It should be good for a few years yet.
I can’t remember the dimensions, but I think 125/80/15 means 15” diameter rim, 125 mm tyre width and 80% of that, I.e. 100 mm for tyre depth. If I’m wrong, no doubt someone else will correct me!

I think a spacesaver from a 2001 -2014  'BMW' mini would fit the Jazz  They have the same centre bore (56.1) and  100 mm 4 stud spacing.(maybe a legacy from Rover)    But not one from a later mini which are 5 stud.

But a mini spacesaver tyre could be at least 10 years old anyway  and it wont necessarily be easier to find  than one for a Jazz, which could be cheaper.

A full sized wheel from a 2001-2014 mini  will also  fit a Jazz but might  need tapered wheel nuts rather than the Honda domed seat types. Maybe easier  just  to get a Honda wheel,.   Even a spacesaver claimed to be from a Jazz might need  tapered nuts. Buying and carrying an extra set of wheel nuts might not be a deal breaker but could be a pita if didnt check.

Try and get a loan of a space saver and drive with it fitted to a rear position then a front position.

I drove a jazz with a space saver once - never again!!

In response to next comment, the car was driven as recommended and even at lwest speed felt very unstable.

The spacesaver is simply a reliable way of getting you slowly to a garage. I have only used one once, on a hire car in Italy and it was invaluable. The garage swapped the hire car so our holiday was not disrupted for long. I don’t carry one now as I’ve decided I’m too old to change a wheel! I will rely on Honda assistance instead, or perhaps, reluctantly, the gunk.

I did a bit of research into the spacesaver for a mini.    It said that on some cooper models its advisable to only use a spacesaver on the rear . If necessary you may need to do a double wheel change  ,swopping a full sized wheel from the rear to the front.  :o  I dont know if this  is because  coopers have larger front brakes calipers, or just a sensible precaution in view of their extra performance.
When I was looking for a second set of wheels back in 2021 I noticed that a major manufacturer of  after market steel rims had a version specified for mk1,2 and  3 Jazz but had introduced a new wheel model for the mk4  (which was also  suitable for earlier cars) It had the same centre bore size, PCD and E/T off set.    I assumed its shape had been changed to allow more clearance for bigger brake callipers.    This put me off buying used rims from a mk3, although IIRC some on this forum  said mk3 wheels will fit a mk4.

This doesnt fill me with confidence that even a spacesaver that came from an earlier  Jazz will be compatible on a mk4  , at least without a test fitting.
