Well, this thread has taken an interesting turn. I’ll just don my tin hat before chipping in my six penn’orth.
Firstly, I don't think my post reply#4 could have been the source of the OP's ire but if it was perceived that way then believe me it wasn't intended and I apologise. As I said, I was just trying to be helpful.
Since we seem to have veered off into the etiquette of the forum, I believe there is no excuse for rudeness in posts. That includes unprovoked SHOUTING, and anyone who does that ought not to be surprised if they get some barbed responses. Whilst this forum is thankfully free of the worst excesses of flaming, trolling etc that blight some other fora, nevertheless one does need a moderately thick skin and must be prepared to take the rough with the smooth.
There is also a difference between being rude and being critical, but some folks might interpret the latter as the former. Criticism is not a bad thing, being (politely) critical is the stuff of intelligent debate and posters must be aware that their comments may provoke criticism. A case in point here is the OP’s admission that she is quite happy to pilot a tonne of steel around public roads whilst not being able to see the instrument panel clearly. That veered away from the original topic but really did deserve to be called out, in the hope that perhaps she might think about that.
The allegation of “talking down to a female” is unjustified. Firstly, if someone (male or female) doesn’t seem to have taken the basic step of checking the handbook for a solution to their issue, they shouldn't be surprised if someone points that out. That might be perceived as condescending or “talking down”, but it’s actually just checking that the basics have been covered. Secondly, I don’t see anything in any of the comments about sex or gender until the OP revealed herself. They are equally applicable to any person of any persuasion. Yes, I know her username
might indicate female, but one shouldn’t read too much into a self-chosen name … eg I doubt that Kremmen is a vain incompetent starship captain, and Lord Voltermore probably isn’t a peer of the realm!
