Question about road-legal H4 LED
« on: August 30, 2024, 12:46:42 PM »
Hello everyone. So scrolling through Amazon I’ve seen Osram and Philips road-legal (at least in Germany and Austria - and I live in Bulgaria, so technically still EU) H4 LED which are specifically made for retrofitting. When I’ve checked Osram’s website about compatibility mk2 Honda Jazz is there, mk1 is not, but given the similarities of the headlights and the reflector type it should not be a problem.
Has anyone got a legit LED for their first gen Honda Jazz?

Have a look at www.classiccarleds.co.uk.
They list led bulbs suitable for the Jazz from 2002 onwards.
Prior to my latest Jazz, I have used their LLB472 for many years without a problem.
They are not cheap, but do the job, having a beam pattern virtually identical to the original.

As far as fitment goes,  H4 is H4, if that's the spec then any H4 will  fit and work, particularly if they are brands like Osram and Phillips.  The only issue will be legality, I know those lamps are certified for specific models in places like Germany,  where rules are tight, and if you use them in non approved applications it can be an offence even if it is approved for a very similar car.
Here in the UK the regulations do not permit any LED aftermarket lamps to be approved,  there simply isn't a process existing which enables a manufacturer to do it. Using them technically means you are not complying with construction and use regulations (lamps must be "E" marked but that is  only available for filament lamps).
If your vehicle inspection system is not too rigid you could use any H4 lamp.

From what I know the relationship between a H4 bulb filament and base is fixed by the lug position of the bulb base, however with LED H4 bulbs that is not the case inasmuch as the beam pattern could be compromised so this is probably the reason why they are not legal certainly here in the UK, in certain EU states they may be ok however I would check with a local motoring organisation here in the uk they would constitute a MOT failure.

Not really.  It's simply that C&U regs say all lamps must show an "E" approval mark,  but there is no process existing which enables manufacturers to gain this approval. The only process in place applies specifically and exclusively to filament lamps, there isn't one for retro-fit LED lamps. Original equipment LED light units can be approved,  but no process for aftermarket LED lamps.
It's archaic regs, but there is no interest nor advantage as far as the regulators are concerned to tackle the issue when they can simply ignore it. Not their problem.

I have fitted h4 LEDs in the past.

If you get them with the correct length and the notch to replicate a real bulb then they usually have a better beam then a normal h4 bulb.

However it doesn't mean you can see any more at nights. After having them in for 2 yr I removed mine and went back to night breaker h4 bulbs.

Because they don't have a sharp cutoff you can see more and your eyes get used to the dark a bit better.

Also tried them in my MK3 as I had them laying about. Again not worth it imo.
