Tyres with stiffer sidewalls?
« on: August 16, 2024, 10:37:33 AM »
So, I'm looking for some new tyres but want some with sidewalls that are more or less as stiff as the OEM ones the car had when I got it. Trouble is all the information I have gleaned seems to be a few years old or the websites I'm looking at are cr*p at navigating around or the tyre types I have gleaned information on don't come in Jazz sizes.

Can anyone point me at currently available tyres with 'OEM stiff sidewalls'? Not interested in another 'what tyre' thread unless it is an example of said sidewall stiffness .....  Ta

Oh, looking at 185/55-R16 sizes.

I have never seen anything on sidewall stiffness but I would imagine that it correlates to the speed rating.  You may need to do some research on that though.

My Lexus IS200 had OEM stiff sidewalls

When I got a puncture that was not repairable they had to order a special tyre in
Let's be careful out there !

Presumably a higher weight rating will provide a stiffer sidewall, for example an 87 over an 84 or a 91 over an 87.

Look at Blackcircles Yokohama BluEarth-GT AE51 - stated to be re-inforced.

Put a set on wife's Fieast ST line-X - great grip

Are you wanting to replace the tyres to match the existing OEM tyres,on the car? If so, I would take the precise size and specification of the tyres from the sidewall of the tyres, taking special note of the speed rating and load rating. When searching on line, input this information into the search not the car registration. Fitting alternative specification tyres may effect your car insurance.Hope this helps.

Totally coincidental but these are what I replaced the OEM tyres with and when I noticed the problem ... (problem to me that is, YMMV!).

On the big on-line tyre sites  (mytyres, black circles etc ) you will often find multiple entries for what at first glance appears to be the same tyre, but at different prices.  Often its because the tyre is available in a variety of load and speed ratings.  Some are available as "XL"  (extra load)   The lower or higher price often has more to do with what stock the seller has been able to obtain at a good price on the world wholesale markets rather than any difference in its basic price.

On choosing a tyre it needs to be the correct sizes, but also meet the minimum load and speed rating quoted by Honda.   But a higher load rating  may have   slightly stiffer side walls

I am not sure what you are hoping to achieve  with 'stiffer side walls' .  They may make a difference  in  ride comfort , handling, noise level ,  rolling resistance, economy   etc   even compared to the same  model of tyre  with a different load rating. But its not always in a good way .    And you can get  the same level of difference   by choosing a different make of tyre even though it has the same speed rating.   Its often just pot luck.

I wouldnt chose  stiffer side walls in the hope of better resistance to side wall damage from potholes etc.   Even if there is a slight difference its unlikely to be enough to protect you from a serious hit on a sharp edged pothole. The only solution is to avoid them.

I am a great fan of top quality all season tyres  (Goodyear Vectors - michelin crossclimate -Vredestein etc)  which have a more rugged appearance to their tread pattern.    But I wouldnt expect  even these  give  any extra sidewall protection from unmade tracks, potholes etc.  ( Although I must admit I chose the 'XL' version for my Goodyear Vectors )          A few tyres are made with significantly increased rubber protection on their side walls, but mostly for serious offroaders, such as a Landrover defender.
My IQ test came back negative
