Windscreen replacement
« on: October 20, 2023, 09:42:19 PM »
As far as I can see there is only one thread on here about a replacement windscreen on a Jazz Mk4 and that doesn't mention how it went.

I have booked my car in with Autoglass as LV will only let you use their repairers or pay more of an excess. I'm not sure that I would trust a Honda dealer to do it either (they probably subcontract it to Autoglass anyway).

The crack in the glass is odd too. I can see that there is a chip just close to the rear view mirror, and the crack has spread in a semi-circle around the mirror area.

Autoglass have just called me to say that they have no stock, which is a bit surprising as all models should have the same glass since they all have the same driver assistance aids! Oh well. I will let you know how it goes.

Have you checked with your Honda dealer of choice for a second opinion / quote yet?
Your car probably still is under warranty and I wouldn't risk anything by going to a third party for replacing important parts (plus my insurance covers glass).

I know on later Civic models the camera has to be recalibrated after a windscreen change

In the early days of the MK10 Civic, from 2017, it was a lengthy procedure involving specialised equipment but I've read that Autoglass have the necessary equipment now
Let's be careful out there !

Hello,
The days of 'Fred' in his garage fitting windscreens the same day and taking about an hour or less to fit are long gone,
99% of new cars have to be calibrated using the latest equipment by properly trained fitter technicians.
Each car will be different to recalibrate to a very high standard , a few degrees out will mean a few feet out or more for all the safety systems.
There are thousands of different size/shape windscreens for all cars, Autoglass couldn't posibly stock each one and usually stocks the most common ,which makes perfectly good financial sense. The Jazz regretfully isn't a high volume seller in the U.K.
Nearly all garages ,including main dealers , sub contract all the windscreen work for purely financial reasons,in fact the actual replacement screen doesn't have to be a genuine factory made item, this is usually stated in the small print of your car insurance. For example a certain high quality car manufacturer sells a 'genuine' screen with their makers name etched on the screen for about £1,000 ,the same screen from the same screen manufacturer as the original but less the name retails at about £400 !!
This is a strange fact that applies to not only car windscreens but hundreds of everyday items , we in the U.K. are badge and name snobs and the manufacturers take advantage of this.
I was told these details from a fully qualified windscreen fitter ( a close relation of mine) and camera etc calibration technician with 25 years experience.

He works for one of the biggest windscreen replacement company in the U.K ,I can't reveal the name for obvious reasons.
Cheers Neale.

Thanks. I almost expected all of the above replies. I emailed the supplying dealer and they told me they did not supply or fit screens and sent all their cars to A*******s. Surprise, surprise. So that is where my car is going.

A bit of history had a nice new 3litre Accord Coupe many years ago (1999?) whichwas very nicely kitted out for it's day.
It suffered a scratched windscreen as a result of a wiper blade detaching - dealers fault.

The spare windscreen had to come from the states to Aberdeen, it was delivered and fitted within 2 days, not may existed in UK to the spec.
