Occasional warning sound
« on: August 17, 2023, 12:02:29 PM »
Hi All, our 2022 Hybrid Jazz occasionally makes a "warning" sound shortly after pulling away from rest. My best way of describing it is a loud tinkling bell sound,  2 seconds max.
Dealer couldn't replicate but thought it was to do with an EV only moving warning for pedestrians, not sure about that. There are no notifications on the dashboard or infotainment screens so we are looking for suggestions as to what it may be. TIA

...If it's only occasionally I would've gone for it being the sat nav detecting a new map update. Although if it was you should see that mentioned in a yellow/orange banner at the top of the screen in writing with a little map icon.

It is possible that if you weren't on the nav screen at the time then the banner would not be seen?

I can't think of anything else that sounds like a bell tinkling.

I think I may have this. The noise arises, like yours, when pulling away from rest. It's different from the noise that comes from any of the parking sensors and the noise that you get when another moving vehicle is in the vicinity.

I, too, have difficulty in describing the noise. It's not really like a bell but it is a ringing type sound, perhaps an electronic ringing sound if that makes sense.

It's random and I can never work out what triggers it.

Do you use Google Maps via Android Auto ?

That can give a 'noise' when it first connects.
Let's be careful out there !

I don't use either so it isn't that. It's very weird, it's very random and appears to be some sort of warning. I wonder if it's something to do with pedestrians being in the vicinity. If so you'd think it would do it if, say, you gave way to a pedestrian crossing the road but it doesn't. It's almost exclusively when moving off but there is often a few seconds time lag in my case.

I can't believe only JoDa and I get this noise.

Could it be a heavy load on one of the seats that triggers the "fasten seatbelt" chime?

I think with a 'warning' shouldn't there be a dash symbol to go with it and give the game away.

I'm still of the opinion it's something giving off a startup sound ....... but I'm usually wrong

I'm totally on the same page with you!
I've taken the idea from the online MY24 manual p37 where it says:

Q: Why does the beeper sound when I start driving?
A: The beeper sounds when the driver and/or any passenger are not wearing their seat belts.

Hi All, thanks for all your replies so far. I can tell you we don't use Android Auto etc and it's not the seat belt warning sound. Peteo48 seems to have experienced it so at least we're not the only ones out there.

Map update available. Had the same sound on my Crosstar this evening. Occurs every 2-3 weeks for me even though the maps are up to date.

Hi All. I can confirm the noise is indeed the map update notification sound.
Thanks to all who contributed.

I too am bewildered by this random ding-a-ling warning when moving off.   I had a new 2022 jazz hybrid and when the mileage reached just short of 6000 miles the random din-a-ling sound came alive.  I had decided to upgrade to another new jazz so subsequently the chime did not perplex me any more.

However the replacement Jazz (Advance sport) started ding-a-linging just short of 6000 miles (same as the first Jazz).  I figured it was something to do with approaching a service and with the car about to go in for it’s first service I assumed it would have some sort of reset and the sound would go away.  But to my surprise the ding-a-ling has popped up a week after the service.

I can find no definitive answer for this sound so I emailed the service department and this is the reply:  “I can confirm that the chime you are hearing is the GPS Navigation system in your vehicle re-connecting. This can happen when the car has been left standing for long periods or when you are in an area where the signal to the GPS has dropped out. In these situations, the GPS will automatically try to re-connect itself and once connected, the chime is played. This is not something that can be turned off or volume adjusted unfortunately.”

My polite opinion on that reply is that it is incorrect because it ignores many of the details I gave to the service department such as why two cars at approximately the same mileage had the same thing happen, and if it is GPS related why did the sounds not start from day one.

Anyway I got to thinking (I am like a dog with a bone) and wondered that perhaps it is somehow GPS related, but just not how the dealership explained it, and I checked the navigation for updates and the installed Garmin version was a 2021 version (car was new in 2023).  So I ran the update and the Garmin version is now the latest 2024 one and I am now waiting to see what happens.  If the warning stays away can I assume it is navigation update related?  Who knows.

The owners manual has zero reference to it, it appears the dealers do not know the answer, and the internet also draws a blank.  It is weird for sure.  There is one consistent thing with this noise and it happens randomly and when moving off after powering up the car.

Incidentally updating the Garmin navigation in itself is a little tricky but finding the website and instructions is less easy.  I got it figured out though and if anyone wants some guidance I am happy to help

So there we have it.  I will give an update after a month or so.
