Finding stations for DAB
« on: November 15, 2022, 03:47:28 PM »
With my previous Crosstar I soon found my favourite stations.  With my new one (the old one was written off) I can't find some stations and I find searching for stations difficult.  I don't understand the Ensemble feature.
Am I doing something wrong?  Thanks.

DAB can be tricky

What seems to happen is a DAB scan finds stations and puts them into folders pertaining to areas.

When I got mine I performed an initial scan and that found and placed the stations into London area folders. When I then drove out to Reading it seemed to auto scan and load more stations into Berkshire related folders.

Ensemble seems to be mechanism whereby you can search for stations by area.
Let's be careful out there !

A DAB ensemble is a group of radio station on the same frequency. Multiple station share the same frequency which allows for more stations across the band width.

I normally start at the ensemble list and then pick from there.

e.g.
BBC National DAB - Radio one, Two, Three etc.
D1 national - Absolute Radio, Kiss, Heart, Magic

Some info about ensembles and station lists.

A DAB Ensemble is also known as a Multiplex or MUX for short. DAB doesn't have individual stations on one frequency like on FM. Each MUX has a capacity of about 1Mbit, shared between multiple radio stations.

After a while using decent bitrates but a poor codec (MUSICAM, aka MPEG Layer 2), economics kicked in and the operators tried to squeeze as many stations into their MUX as the public would tolerate by dropping bitrates and reducing the sound to mono. The biggest change in DAB+ is to use a more up to date codec (AAC+). It's possible to mix the two codecs on the same MUX. The Jazz Mk4 has a DAB+ receiver.

DAB uses the same radio band that was used for 405 line TV.

Interestingly, Ireland experimented with DAB and abandoned it last year.

Slightly off topic, but, I noticed years ago that a portable radio playing FM could last months on a single set of batteries but play DAB and the batteries only last days.
Let's be careful out there !

Yes, that’s called progress! Quality certainly no better with DAB than FM but energy required is significantly more. I wonder how many more batteries are going into landfill now? Environmentally DAB is highly inferior to FM.

Environmentally DAB is highly inferior to FM.

And sound enthusiasts would say inferior too! Progress indeed.

Agreed, I remember when “superior” digital CD’s superceded “inferior” analogue Vinyl - except it wasn’t inferior with a much more involving soundstage. Now, vinyl is making a comeback but is that fashion or for the superior sound??

Thanks for all the replies.  I was able to get the station today.  I have 2 DAB radios at home and all stations are listed in alphabetical order.  I suppose the problem with car radios is that cars move about......

Back when it started, the BBC's engineers said that 256kbps MUSICAM was "just acceptable". Most stations use 128kbps or less. Even Radio 3 is 192kbps or less (when R5Live Sports Extra is active).

DAB+ can give a good sound at about 64kbps, but many stations use lower bitrates.

It's "pile it high, sell it cheap" philosophy.

DAB chipsets have become more power efficient as they've evolved. The only thing that can beat an FM radio is a crystal set receiving AM (no batteries needed).

CD doesn't have anywhere near the surface noise of vinyl. You have to be very careful with LPs in storing them to avoid static and dust, and use a very expensive turntable to make them sound anywhere near as good as CDs. And CDs have much more usable dynamic range than LPs if it's actually used.

The Loudness Wars have resulted in some abysmally sounding CDs.

Has anyone noticed that some DAB stations can drop back to FM when they lose signal? It's most amusing on Classic FM as it has different advertising regions on FM but only one on DAB.

When I used to listen to DAB,  before I switched to USB, on a journey from London to Eastbourne, via the pretty route, the radio dropped out, silence, down the dip that is Forest Row, and only returned half way up the hill the other side.

The Jazz Mk4 has a DAB+ receiver.
Is that true? I can't find any information in the Jazz manual about the DAB system used. Also, I haven't been able to find GB News, which is only broadcast on DAB+.

Copied from the Polish brochure:

♦ Radio AM/FM z 9-calowym ekranem
♦ Odbiornik * radia cyfrowego DAB+

* Digital radio DAB+

The German brochure (page 45 / 47): https://broschueren.honda.de/cars/jazz-brochure/?page=46

Interesting

I looked through the newer HRV and Civic literature and nowhere is DAB+ mentioned
