I-Vtec gear box problem
« on: August 22, 2010, 03:39:36 AM »
I have a 2010 I-Viec Automatic Honda Jazz.

After about 600 miles one day I started it up and it would not engage reverse gear.  I went to my local Honda dealer and they told me they were not aware of any such problem and to monitor it. They also suggested I let them have the car if I was not satisfied and they would drive it around to see if they could find the fault. I was reluctant to do this which as it has taken another 2400 miles for the fault to show again seemed ther right idea.

The car is now 2 1/2 months old and has 3100 miles on the clock and all of a sudden the fault has re-occurred. Twice in front of witnesses I put the car in reverse and it would not move. The "R" on the display flashes and the engine revs up but the thing would not move. I twice put it back into neutral and then reverse and still nothing would happen. I then put the car into "A1", moved forward a few feet, stopped and then put it in reverse and all was well. When selecting reverse there is a clunking sound.

I am going back to Honda with it but expect to be told all is normal.

Could this be the bearings breaking up? Any ideas?

Doesn't sound like a bearing problem, more like sensor or electronics.

My wife had a Fiat Punto Selecta (bless that little money pit!) with a similar problem on auto gearbox, the dealer had it back and kept it for 3 weeks and eventually fitted a new ECU (it cost them about £1200).

The problem still kept happening (very embarrassing at junctions and islands)  so we took it for a second opinion to another Fiat dealer - it took them 20 minutes to replace a faulty switch to the brake pedal (it fed a signal back to ECU and it was there to stop auto gearbox engaging power to the wheels when the brake pedal was pressed down).
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

These are not an auto gearbox but a manual gearbox with electronic gear change (I-SHIFT).
Honda are fazeing out the I-shift, I think end of this year so next year will only have surplus stock to be sold.
Maybe a silly question but are you holding your foot on the break long enough for the box to select reverse. If not then you will get this problem as break needs to be pressed in order to go in to gear.

Yes I am keeping foot on brake until "R" was selected.

There is now also a clunk every time I select R.  When selecting other gears there is no noise. I did not have this before.

Hi poolmaster.

You are correct it is not an automatic as such. We were sold it as an automatic. Going to take legal action against the garage.

In the meantime, went out and purchased a brand new automatic from anotherr company. Pity as this was my 3rd Jazz.

Oh dear. A big irritation (soz for spelling) of mine is when the saleman/woman is selling these cars but taking the customer through everything and so when there is a problem or concern the customer is unhappy and sales dont care. It is always service that are left to pick up the pieces.

What a big mistake to make but not supprised. It is an I-Shift not a manuel nor a automatic. Hope all goes well for you.

Two people in the same garage have describe the I-Vtec gearbox differently. The salesman tells me it is Automatic. The service manager tels me it is a clutchless manual gearbox that can be driven as an automatic. The garage wher I purchased a new car yesterday tells me they never discribe the similar one they offer as automatic and that they do not sell many.It could also be described as a semi automatic.

What do one believe.

I will keep you informedc as I gave the garage a chance to do somethiing about it. they did not. I am now writing a formal letter of complaint and asking for compensation as advised by trading standards and my solisitor.

I will keep you informed.

The salesman tells me it is Automatic.

Probably because it can be driven on an automatic license.

Good luck with your case.
