K&N Air Filter
« on: August 11, 2010, 01:21:49 PM »
Has anyone tried fitting a K&N air filter to their Jazz (GE model).  It's supposed to increase MPG and give a little more power (which would be usefull at times).  Do they really work as they are quite pricey (approx. £45) but you don't have to replace them, just need a clean with a cleaning solution (also adds to the cost).

Also how would the engine management system respond when it detects more air is being sucked in, would the engine management system need adjusting or would it adjust itself ?

Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated

Just be careful that it doesn't invalidate the warranty.

If it is a replacement panel filter it should not invalidate the warranty.

I have one in my GD and did not notice any difference. I fitted it because it would work out cheaper in the long run and I know they are the best filter you can buy in terms of airflow and filtration. They continue to flow very well even when dirty.

is KN replacement panel filter cleaned with water?

or do we need some special cleaners which makes it costly ?

From what I have been told you need to wash them in a solution (not sure what it is), Halfords do sell a K&N cleaning kit.

I believe K&N are oiled cotton.  Have to be re-oiled every so often.  Therein lies a risk to the air mass sensor.  Here is a link to an extensive test of various filter types.  http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest1.htm  Entertaining debate here:  http://tinyurl.com/27ndh4o which is where the "test" was cited.  Is the apparent feeble improvement in flow worth the trouble of fitting and maintaining an aftermarket filter?

To clean a K&N filter you simply rinse it with water from the inside out. I think you can get some cleaning fluids but the instructions on my filters (from the 1980`s) said water.

You then let it air dry and carefully re oil it using K&N filter oil. It is quite easy to over oil and it is better to just dribble a little along each pleat and let it soak in. The filter will go pink.

There have been a lot of tests and reviews of filters but it is easy for the testers and readers to draw incorrect conclusions.

David Vizard has tested many filters and he recommends K&N filters and if they are good enough for him then they are good enough for me and the rest of us.

Even better, remove your existing filter, remove any dirt with vacuum cleaner , replace filter.
