Heat shield under exhaust rattling
« on: January 10, 2022, 06:12:52 PM »
Hi all, took the jazz in for tracking today following some new tyres and asked the guys at national if they could see what was causing a rattling sound underneath. Turned out it was one end of the heat shield under the exhaust on the drivers side that had corroded. I asked if they could fix it and they said you don't need it, and ripped it out. I trusted them as two of them said the same, but when I looked online it seems there is differing opinion and it's possibly an MOT fail. Any ideas where I can source a new one/replacement, or does it not need to be there? I assume if I took it to a welders place they may be able to weld a piece of aluminum or something in it's place?

tbh id say you should be ok. would cost the earth to try and weld it. sometimes extra large flat washers can help if its just come away from the fasteners

Ripped ours off in 2016. Passed every MOT since and no other issues. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks, the guys said it wasn't near the fuel tank and he didn't know why they put them on in that place.

The fuel tank is under the front seat as is your middlebox.

It looks as though this heatshield was in the middle of the car on the driverside, possibly a nearer the rear than the front

I always wonder about necessity of the heat shields, but then think if they really are not needed then why are car companies wasting money putting them on cars… considering how we all know they try to cut costs all the time.

Try driving long a motorway on a hot summer's day and then get stuck in a 1 hour jam in full sunlight. Car will heat up a lot - and a hot exhaust radiating heat into the car will make it very uncomfortable.

That is why heat shields are fitted in modern cars.

If you drove a pre 1980s car in those conditions, you would understand the need. (I used to run early Post War Rovers as daily drivers: great cars but they could become like ovens. Seriously hot. I can understand why pre WW2 carts had opening windscreens.. my 1929 Riley 9 saloon had - and it was like an oven despite that. Don't even mention the fuel tank of the front bulkhead over your feet and beside the engine!)

So what's the cheapest/easiest solution? Exhaust wrap on the pipe?

Due to corrosion mine came lose a few yrs ago. Unbolted the remaining fixed bolt and removed. Been to a few mots since then and nothing mentioned. Another over engineered Honda item not necessary needed. My thoughts only. Have a good evening.
