Garmin
« on: October 20, 2021, 04:07:02 PM »
I have been in Europe,  France, Switzerland and Italy. The GPS worked very well in France and Italy but was useless in Switzerland. The routing tried everything to avoid using motorway. It is not set to avoid motorway.
I was just north of Milan Italy going to Metz in France. A distance of 447 kilometers. However when it calculated the route. The shortest was 826 km.
Just after the san Gottardo tunnel in Switzerland i stopped and the distance to Basel was 133 km however the route the system calculated was 1070km. Even though there was a straight motorway to Basel.

I’ve only used mine a few times as a backup when I couldn’t get CarPlay to work.

The lack of traffic/etc info is quite poor as it can make a big difference to what route you take.

You have to pay to use Swiss motorways. Did you have 'Avoid Tolls' set.

You have to  pay to use some  French and Italian motorways. The swizz motorway are free so long as you have a  vinegete. Which is the swizz road tax.

It clearly makes no difference to Garmin how you pay for the toll road, cash, credit card, through a vignette or electronic registration.
"Avoid Tolls" will result in Garmin NOT taking you on motorways (or any road) where you have to pay for, one way or another, if there is an alternative (free) route, even if it is much longer.

If i had avoid tolls it wouldn't have worked in France of Italy. This is the route it chose in for a 133km journey which it then calculated at 1070km.

Bit late now presumably but I wonder what other routes it would have calculated if you'd selected the multiple route option ?
Let's be careful out there !

Very weird... It gave only one option?

In my view 447 km was just over half the distance...  :D
