I would suggest that the first option of driving normally and braking hard is biased. Better wording would simply be "driving normally."

First option before I changed it to normal drive  was not hybrid stile at all ー fast start then fast breaking to get minimum possible mpg but be first on next traffic light   ;)

Brisk but not full acceleration actually gets great mpg - the engine is most efficient when working 80% so getting up to speed means you can then cruise.

There isn’t much you can do to alter 70mph motorway mpg other than reduce speed though.

50mph roadwork sections on the motorway are where I get the best mpg, approaching 70.

Yes - I got some excellent figures on my Mk2 on a long drive back from Cornwall to Warrington in 2017 because there was a 50 limit on the M6 for about 50 miles (conversion to smart motorway). Also, on that trip, got poor figures cruising at 70 mph (about 47 mpg) on the way down. It simply isn't an economical speed.

Yes, I've done a few thousand miles now at 70mph - consistent average is 53mpg at that speed.

Still quite good though, on the same journeys/speeds/performance I was getting 47mpg in a diesel hatchback.

Not as good as my Mk1 Yaris hybrid at 57mpg which is the best long term mpg I've had from any car, but that was awfully slow above 50mph and noisy too.

Increase's brake regenerating and it's like changing down a couple of gears when going downhill.
Unfortunately it does not work with cruise control, so I only use it for going down hills instead of using the brakes.

I got tailgated on a country road last night, so put the car through its paces for a few miles. I set the limiter at 60mph and drove a bit more aggressively than normal.

I suspect the following driver might not have expected a Jazz to do that.

At the first place where there was a safe overtaking opportunity I slowed down and let the following driver past.

It didn't do the MPG figures any favours for that trip.  ;D
