I think this petition is misguided.  EV’s will gain longer range as battery technology develops.  I think government emphasis should be on improving the coverage of electric-powered public transport.  Perhaps the day will come when we give up privately-owned cars and just rent EV’s as required.

Renting cars only will be ideal:

Car checks your face against database and your ID Card..summons police if you are not whom you claim to be.
Checks if you have a licence.. summons police if not.
Does not check insurance as you pay for that each drive.
Checks if you are on its database for leaving car in broken/damaged consition w/o paying for the repairs. Summons police if so.

Logs where you went, who the  passengers were.

Perfect for the modern police state.

Many a true word said in jest.... :o

Hope they are better than these 'Police' cars, too slow to use for any useful work so they now carry flat cap coppers to unconscious bias meetings and lunch - still, another box ticked and damn the expense.

Looking much further forward a combination of EVs plus self driving cars could change things quite radically. Not in my lifetime but you can see a scenario where you summon up a "car" with Alexa!

Car checks your face against database and your ID Card.

What ID Card would that be then?

Actually, cynicism aside, short-term PAYG car hire is already here in the form of car clubs, eg:
https://www.enterprisecarclub.co.uk/gb/en/about/how-car-club-works.html
ID & licence checks happen when you join, everything else is covered by insurance. And the car will (probably) record where you went and how you drove as well, because most modern cars do.

I’ve just seen what I think is the all electric VW ID.3 with 21 registration.  It looks very smart in white and like the Golf, will no doubt become a market leader.  However, with a list starting price of £28,600 net of EV grant, it makes the hybrid Jazz seem good value for similar accommodation.  The range is quoted as 263 miles, but I have doubts about that from a 58 kWh battery.  225 miles might be more realistic.

From what I've heard, the manufacturer range is without any other electrics on.

Friend has a Jag iPace and he reckons his average is about 175 miles. Not the 225 he was led to believe in the brochure at the time.
Let's be careful out there !

There are already a lot of rural based NMW earners that are on the very margins of affordability with traditional ICE cars that they depend on daily to get themselves to work. How on earth are they supposed to make the transition to an EV at that kind of price? Total joke really.

I can buy a very useable Jazz for little money, in fact, I did so. It was 7yrs old and didnt cost a lot. I wouldn't be able to do the same with a 7yo VW ID, and I would bet the ranch on the Jazz being more reliable!

https://www.dacia.co.uk/vehicles/sandero.html What Car? COTY 2021. A safe car,  with air con and 90BHP, £124 a month and away you go. EV have a long way to go before they are broadly affordable.

I have been looking at cheap (!) used Leafs (or should that be Leaves?). You are talking about £5K. Saw one for £4K but it was an import.

They would be the earliest 24kWh ones ? Not bad for a car originally priced at £28k + "with a range of less than 80 miles....

Wait 6 months, Leafs normally fall in the autumn....

And then you have the issue of whether the battery is  owned or leased..
