How to remove Honda locking wheel nut
« on: February 26, 2021, 06:03:41 PM »
After fitting new brake pads and discs, I forgot to remove the Honda locking wheel nut key.  It probably flew off during the 1 mile test drive.  I feel like a plonker for making such a simple mistake...

I found the keycode but I notice Cox Motors charge £28 for a replacement key!

Would it be cheaper to just buy a new set of locking wheel nuts?

Any advice how to remove the locking wheel nuts?

Is Honda still the best place to buy locking wheel nuts?

I hate locking wheel nuts, removed mine and replaced with standard. If you need a set, I would be happy with a tenner plus carriage.
Here they are

Thanks for the offer.  Do you still have the key codecard ?

Let me walk first part of the route I took for the test drive tomorrow morning.  Small chance I may find the key, but not at all hopeful.

I did wonder whether I still need locking wheel nuts.  I would  guess some low life is more likely to liberate the alloys off a 'newer' car, than off my 57 Jazz, but I could be wrong.

Alloys wheels are so common now, you don't hear of thefts like you used to. Locking wheels nuts are more trouble than they're worth, especially on older cars.

Totally agree, hence my removal.

I have even removed them from my new MX-5 RF as it's garaged  and only used on fine days in Spring/Summer/ Autumn and hardly ever left unattended.

I just looked on Youtube.  They all advise just hammering a 12 point socket over the locking wheel nut to remove it.  So much for wheel security ?

Update:  May not work on these Mcgard wheel nuts for Honda.  See later post.

I was just about to message you the same, that's the favourite trick to remove them.

Thieves can have them off quicker than you can with the key.

I had the same issue years back on my CR-V.  At that time not even the garage could remove the nuts without the wheelnut key, which is why they keep a biscuit tin with a selection in.

I rifled through the tin until I found the one that fitted and then ordered a replacement through the dealer.

The dealer, Horizon Honda in Poole, even lent me the one that I found in the tin until my new one arrived.

My locking wheel nuts are the same type as the photo posted by Ukjim.

I'm not 100% sure, but it may have an outer rotating ring, designed to defeat the use of 12 point sockets according to one youtube video I viewed ?

I think these may be made by McGard.

Cut the ring off with a small cold chisel.

Cut the ring off with a small cold chisel.

Unfortunately, that looks like a difficult/messy job to me.

I found this old thread that suggests replacement keys were as little as £9 from Honda a few years ago.
https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=8805.msg45993;topicseen#msg45993

£19.99 including delivery from Perth Honda I found on eBay.

A Swindon based Honda dealer charge £14.00 + £5.99 delivery.
https://hondadirectparts.co.uk/parts/uncategorised/honda-locking-wheel-nut-key-code-83265909/

Unclear why Cox Motors is asking eye watering £33 inc. delivery for replacement key.

Looks like best option is to order a key from my local Honda dealer on Monday.

Looks like I may end up having to order a key from my local Honda dealer on Monday.

The old thread sounds promising, not worth the hassle if you can get one for that sort of price, or a bit more.

I had a problem with a stuck locking bolt, combination of an overtight bolt and a worn key. I bought a replacement key and subsequently broke the new key too... ended up having to use the socket method, and promptly threw the lot in the scrap and refitted standard bolts.

I bought an accord a few years ago that has no key supplied. I bought a dynomec kit from here to remove all 4: https://lockingwheelnutremover.co.uk/
It worked perfectly, it's not cheep, but it is a lot cheaper than paying for recovery, I'd recommend it. The kit basically has tools to remove all types, including 3 'blanks' to make an emergency one for your type. One was sufficient for all 4 on the accord. I wouldn't trust it for repeated use though so bought some more honda ones. Good luck.
