Council MOT Test
« on: February 17, 2021, 04:41:14 PM »
I'd read about Council sites having MOT test facilities open to the public on Money Saving Expert, so thought I would give them a try. The cost was £40, and in our centre they have a nice waiting room with a TV showing the test being carried out. Easy to book and use. Tester commented about the fairness of the test as they have nothing to sell, which is a fair point.

First time I've presented our Jazz for a test and it passed with no advisories, which a great result.  :D

Emissions: Fast idle test
CO2 0.00%
HC 2 ppm against a limit of 200 ppm max

Sounds great to me!

Just checked and Fife Council do it too. I suppose they need the facilities for all their vehicles and it makes sense to keep it fully employed.

Public MOTs are offered at my local bus depot.

Our local council depot that does MOTs has a good reputation, but it's about 20 miles away from where I live now.

Second best is a good relationship with a local garage.

It is not the cost of an MOT that worries me. It is the cost of any ensuing repairs.

TBH, if my car needed any work I feel happier it being done by a good franchise with the correct tools , expertise and genuine parts.

So far my 2013 Civic, only on 24k miles has only needed the annual service.

All being well and according to plan, I can see me getting a Jazz before it's next due.
Let's be careful out there !

I think a free mot with a service is a standard's thing with Honda dealers, I've had it at two main dealers before, Grantham & Kings Lynn, it seems to be like the free roadside assistance, you have to ask about it. I got both last month along with my service (included in the 5 years free servicing that came with the car).

I'm not saying don't get it done at the main dealer. When you run an old car as I do, the MOT cost can pale into insignificance compared to the cost of repairs irrespective of where they are done.

Whatever you do, avoid Kwikfit! Had bad experience with them.
