Best Jazz to avoid catalytic converter theft
« on: January 31, 2021, 09:46:29 AM »
Hi all

I’d be so grateful for any advice!

My 2007 Jazz was violated last night. Catalytic converter stolen and perhaps some other damage as the car makes the most awful noise. Insurance has suggested that the car is going to be a write off. In any case, I can’t bear replacing the cat and then having it stolen as I hear it can be stolen with a cage around it as well.

I really like the Jazz and want to buy another. I’ve heard that from 2015 Jazz onwards, it’s almost impossible to steal the catalytic converter. Is this true?

Hi,
Sorry to hear you've been had. Yes, you're right the Mk3 cat is very difficult to steal as it's practically in the engine bay.

However, just in case when the initial unpleasantness passes you're looking for a cheaper solution there's lots of threads about it here. For example https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=11266.msg88966#msg88966 which should point you to a replacement at reasonable cost. Also finally someone is selling an anti-theft device for sensible money, e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Catalytic-Converter-Anti-Theft-Steel-Plate-For-Honda-Jazz-2002-2008-1-2-1-3-1-4/174559003006?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Or is it? What do you think?

Thanks for the replies!

It was quite a shock. Can’t believe they’re brave enough to come into my front drive with their extremely loud drill!

I don’t think I’ll want to fix it at all, so worried that they’ll have marked my car ready for a brand new one to be installed.

Thanks for the advice. A newer Jazz it is!

They are not so keen for the cheap eBay replacements as there is no money in them.

That's the real shame, another usable car will be written off due to this. Seeing some decent Jazzes minus their cat regularly in auction now.

They are not so keen for the cheap eBay replacements as there is no money in them.

Assuming they can tell the difference, what you have to ask is once they are under there, are they going to carry on for 8 quid or so?

Its a toss up.

I was thinking they may think we did that one, it will have a cheapy fitted now and not even bother lifting it.

Yes. but the OP had posted so worried that they’ll have marked my car ready for a brand new one to be installed.
Obviously worried about the original mob coming back. We had one week of thefts local to me, but the police nabbed three Rumanians, and last I heard they were off to the nick. May well be back in Rumania by now. Never had any bother since.

I sometimes wonder if it might be worth printing out a little window sticker that says something like "Thieves Beware! EBay Cat' fitted. Don't waste your time".

I think I’d rather have a sticker that says

CAT coated with Novichok, please help yourself!

Ive come across with this garage in London Harrow to be doing a two layer protection with a cage and guard for £240 including labour. Please see tge picture attached.
I saw there are some nuts and bolts on the cage and I wonder if that needs welding or not..

Hope this helps to someone.
I'm planning to go and get mine done with this garage in March...

It looks like the sort of thing you could do yourself with a roll of cable and some clamps. Sounds like all its money, unless they offer some sort of guarantee or insurance. The critical bit is at the front of the cat, top of the picture - if they can get a pipe cutter anywhere on that bit of pipe, you've had it.

If they used locking nuts, I would think it would make it sufficiently difficult to remove. You could just bruise the exposed thread end of the bolts.
