High Mileage MK2
« on: January 24, 2021, 03:06:04 PM »
Hi

I yesterday looked at a high mileage manual 1.2 mk2.  It had a little wear and tear on the body, but not too bad for a cheap car. It has a full service history and the engine ticked over silently whilst running very well with tight running gear.  Does anyone have experience of high mileage mk2's and what might need attention as the higher miles rack up. Most Jazz'z seem to die as the bodies are battered into submission, rather than wearing out.  All I could obviously see as showing signs of wear were the seats where the covers were quite "saggy", can they be tightened up?  Or best replaced by one from a scrap yard?

Thank you

Nigel

It depends what you call high mileage, these engines are easily capable of 200K, maybe 300K miles if maintained properly. If there's decent evidence of servicing, I wouldn't worry about it.

Scrapyard seat probably the best bet, plenty of mk 2 stuff in scrapyards now, or breaking on ebay for cheaper prices.

One member had 256K out of a Hybrid 2015 Jazz. And the engine was still good.
How high mileage are you talking about?

It's on 175k now and I was wondering if there is another 50k or five more years in it without much other than perhaps a starter, clutch or alternator that might need replacing.  Assuming of course that rust does not get it first!

Well, they don't seem particularly prone to rust, and I would say that with proper maintenance, you would have a better chance of running that for five years without any major disasters, than say a Clio with half the mileage.

My 2006 Mk 1 has spent its entire life by the seaside, and the only rust is over the rear wheel arches where mud and salt had gathered behind the lip. It just passed an MOT last month. Only 134,000 miles on mine though.

It's still a baby, the 1.5 Jazzes(Fit) in the US often go well past 500k miles with very little work needed other than normal service items.

All about condition for any used Jazz over 7 yes.
Take a look at tyres do you recognize the make, kerbing on fr wheels. Ask about maintenance, any bills.
Check under the bonnet leaks , take off the dip stick black & smelly.
How does it perform check reverse on full lock etc.
High mileage is fine if there is a series of invoices.
Good luck with your search.

OP says it has a full service history. With regard to bills. I don't keep any of mine. Old cars don't often come with detailed paperwork.

My previous Jazz went to 256,000 miles. The only big expense I had on it was the air conditioning compressor which packed up around the 200k mark, and cost £650 for a replacement, apart from that it was good as gold until I went through a puddle which hid a pothole and jarred a driveshaft, breaking two seals, and basically ruining the gearbox.

What year and asking price is this car?

Ozzie wound his car up to 250k, so on that basis it should last you 50k.  :)

It is 2011 and needs a few scratches touched in on the front bumper. Beyond that, the seats covers on the bases have stretched, the gear knob is worn and some scratches on the hard dash plastic.(not sure about the aircon). The body has some surface scratches and a little paint missing which is par for the course as Honda's do tend to have thin paint.  It has full Honda service history.
