Radio can't stay on
« on: November 03, 2020, 09:56:47 AM »
Irritation with new Jazz. For years cars had the function of hitting the radio ON button when no key in ignition. Handy if waiting for somebody either as driver or passenger. Unable to do this with Jazz. Radio only on when car switched on. Have had occasions when engine starts for a few seconds. Also it means having to switch everything off so lights, wipers, A/C aren't on.

On one of my wifes earlier cars the Fiat 'money pit' the radio would stay on with ignition off - flattened the battery a couple of times,  never got used to the idea of having to turn the radio off before leaving the car....
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

My 2007 Mk1 Jazz requires me to put the key in the ignition and turn one click to get the radio to work. So, it has been a Jazz feature for quite a while! Original radio with CD, by the way.

Did you check the various Power modes in the manual?

Quote
If you carry the keyless remote and press POWER button without depressing the brake pedal, the power mode will change in this order: VEHICLE OFF > ACCESSORY > ON > VEHICLE OFF.

VEHICLE OFF:Vehicle power is turned OFF.
ACCESSORY:The audio system and some accessories can be used.
ON:All accessories can be used.

To be honest, I was wondering too, being new to these keyless cars...
You gave me an excuse to search in the relevant section of the manual. And bang! There it was.  ;D

Just a thought: I own a Toyota Corolla hybrid and we are advised to always switch the car on and not sit in it in ACC mode for long periods of time. The reason is that our cars have a much smaller capacity 12v battery because it is no longer used to start the engine (the main hybrid battery does that). Toyota's advice is to just let the ICE start/stop while you're waiting as it will charge the battery.

We also have advice for the current lockdown suggesting we sit in the car with the engine on for an hour every week to help ensure the 12v battery is topped up.

Whether this applies to Honda hybrids or not I don't know but it seems reasonable that it might.

An hour a week seems an inordinately long time. My weekly commute, over 5 days, barely comes to that.

When car owner user manuals became over 20 pages, most copies remainded in the glove box.

That advice is for lockdown (the original one at least) where we weren't allowed to drive without a good reason. In that scenario simply switching the car on will not be enough to start charging the 12v. You have to wait until the ICE comes on which could take a while, especially with the warm weather at the time (in winter it comes on within sixteen seconds to provide cabin heat).

I kept my Corolla fit by taking the longest possible way round to Tesco once a week so I don't know exactly how the car behaves when you just switch it on and wait. I have stopped in a layby and left the car on and the ICE didn't switch on in the time it took me to eat a sandwich and have a drink so 60 minutes might be a reasonable time to have to wait to be sure it eventually fires up. If Toyota didn't bother to have the ICE come on specifically because the 12v was low (a bit naff) then all you can do is wait and if you are whiling the time away reading or talking you could easily not notice when the ICE wakes up so 'wait an hour' could just be Toyota covering their bases.

And I know that one of the issues with the older Jazz is that infrequent use can result in a flat battery (several of my Dad's friends ended up buying solar charges because of it).

A lot of cars now come with a PDF link for the manual. Saves printing and easily updated.

As some of you may already have found out the manual is also actually within the Display Audio under the Personal Assistant so no need to fill up the glove box with your paper manual.
