I'm happy at 60 ish, inside lane. Never been flashed.

I do take in the circumstances though. If I'm almost in a lorry convoy I will speed up or slow down to match their speed rather than be an obstruction.
Let's be careful out there !

Yes - I do this as well. I overtake slower moving trucks as well. Having said that, most of my motorway work (such as it is) is on very busy motorways so 70 mph simply isn't an option.

Last Saturday I gave my daughter a lift to the evening do of her friend's wedding. I hit the M6 for about 6 miles on the way back - traffic sparse so I did 70 mph for the whole of this stretch. I could see the mpg edging down as I did it.

I find it a bit uncomfortable to sit in the inside lane of an empty motorway doing 60 mph. As per usual I was overtaken by 50% of the cars on that stretch.

My daughter does 80 to 85 on the M6 if it's clear (she's never been done for speeding - yet!). She's got a Toyota CHR  Hybrid on order from the lease company. I think she might be disappointed in the mpg!

60 isn't something new to my Jazz, I've been comfy at 60 for about a decade now.

According to the Jazz video I’ve seen, 85mph gets you 38mpg!

Will probably be a shock as the CHR should be even less.

Yes - I think she's in for a shock. She's expecting much better mpg than the 32 mile per gallon she gets out of her Qashqai.

I don't understand the 80, 85mph + drivers.

At that speed thinking time is less, plus they are presumably constantly on the lookout, all angles, for Police, speed cameras and other vehicles travelling slower.

It doesn't sound like a very relaxing drive to me.

Before I took, and passed,  the IAM test back in 83, I had a few lessons from a qualified IAM instructor. The one bit of advice that stuck in my mind was 'you should arrive at your destination as refreshed as you set off. If not you need to change your driving style'

If, like me, you lived in a country where the speed limit on the motorway is 140 km/h = 87 mph, I suspect you would get used to 80 or 85 mph very quickly.
I normally try to hold back a bit and arrange the ACC somewhere between 73 and 77 mph. but that's no guarantee that it won't go a little faster every now and then.
And I don't have to think much, at that speed I just go with the flow and I don't have to be on the lookout for police and speed cameras.
If it's not very busy on the road it really is a relaxing drive. ACC and LKAS on and here we go!

I drove my civic 1600+ miles in two days going from London to Prague and back, all averaging around 80/85 which was the speed limit then.

I just sat at 80/85 for most of each day, it took maybe 10 hours each way.

Apart from Germany where it was 120+ on the derestricted sections. But not for long, as the civic was gearing limited - 120mph was around 6k revs and close to redline!

Even at 120mph there were plenty of German cars passing me doing 160+.

If everyone is doing the higher speeds and expecting it, then there isn’t an issue.

I forgot to qualify I was purely referencing UK roads.

Of course other countries with higher limits you're not having to constantly look over your shoulder.

Hit my highest ever mpg in any car today.

A mix of 30/40/50 mph roads with a bit of traffic.

12 mile journey, driven normally at the limits with climate control blowing a fair bit due to the temperature…

107.9 mpg!

I also managed a 80 mpg 10 mile journey today too - a big difference from my 16,000 mile average of 50mpg.

As well as what the trip computer recorded as a 44mpg 12 mile return trip… but that did include over an hour of idling so can be ignored.

Urban use is definitely what the Jazz looks to be designed for, rather than efficient motorway travel.

Today 150 miles, mostly 90 km/h (56 mph) roads, also some 70 km/h (43.5 mph) roads and very little urban:
3,6 l/100 km = 78.5 mpg.

Two extremes today on a short trip - 199.9 mpg on the way out and 35mpg on the way back.

Highest I’ve seen and lowest too - it shows how the battery charge has a big influence.

Trip out was with a charged battery, trip back it was empty.

Steady high speed is where the mpg drops away for me with the 16” tyres.

Above 50mph, mpg drops rapidly.

On the motorway, the best mpg I could get long distance over 50 miles cruising was 60mpg at a steady 60mph (real mph - 62 indicated.)

My old 2013 Yaris hybrid got better mpg than the Jazz at 70mph on 100+ mile trips - 55mpg Yaris vs 50mpg Jazz.

3,6 l/100 km = 78.5 mpg.

I just don't understand how those figures are possible. As soon as I get above 50mph I can watch the average mpg figure drop by 0.1mpg every few minutes which is backed up by the engine cutting in far more frequently.

My mpg mirrors what sportse gets :

70mph = ~50mpg
60mph = ~60mpg
50mph = ~70mpg

and if you do an urban journey all under 40mph you can get closer to 90 or 100mpg+
