Jazz, Unable to select proper gears, jerks shows engine light.
« on: October 03, 2025, 07:20:07 PM »
Hi there,

I recently purchased a 2006 Honda Jazz and I'm having a few issues with it. The main issue I'm having is that the car seems to not know what gear to use when causing the car to jerk. This is problem 1 but I have been told that a transmission oil change might fix it. My main problem along with the jerk is that at high speeds on drive the revs will sometimes go extremely high/ 4-5k and takes time for it to come back down. Along with that while its at this high rev range the EML comes on and then it disappears once the correct gear is chosen.

The biggest issue I had was when driving on the motorway it would sometimes as mentioned before shoot up all the way to 4-5K revs but it also turns off fully. The car cuts power and all gauges go to 0. Happened to me on a smart motorway and i was extremely scared, but i switched the car back on, shot up to 4k revs then it solved itself.

There is also no ABS light showing on the dash when the car is switched on.

I took it to a mechanic and they got these error codes

Anti Lock Braking System
54-01 Fail-Safe Relay Failure
61-01 Battery Voltage Failure.

Is anyone able to tell me what i should do to get this fixed?

fwiw, ABS light not coming on briefly during self diagnostics when rotating key from position I to II, may or may not be a sign someone has tampered with the instrument cluster to hide the ABS fault.  ie. take bulb out or blank it off....

All three fault codes you report seem to be related to ABS system according to Google.  I believe faulty ABS pump motor is quite common on ageing GD1 cars.

What is the current mileage?

The 2006 automatic is a CVT.  It doesn't have fixed gear ratios.  When was the CVT transmission oil last changed.

The engine shouldn't cut out as you describe.  If you purchased the car from a car dealer recently, take it back to them.  Unless you can reproduce the faults easily and safely, it will be difficult to determine the engine fault if no fault codes are stored.

In any case, there is a problem with the ABS system in first instance.

2007(57) Jazz 1.4SE CVT-7 (GE3 - made in China) entering retirement at 21k miles. Some unbody surface rust. Rear brake issues.
2025(75) Arona 1.0 tsi DSG, with GPF :-(
