2011 I-VTEC ES CVT growling noise advice please!
« on: September 14, 2025, 12:26:13 PM »
Hi all!
I bought a second hand Jazz in June there a few months back. It had a growling noise while accelerating which the seller assured me would be fixed with new gearbox oil. Well got the oil replaced and the noise is still there. Took it to an auto transmission specialist (I'm in NI so only have 2 options) and he says it'll need a full new gearbox after another 5k miles. 3.5k miles later and this week it's started shuddering occasionally. Specialist says it needs replaced before the end of October. I need to source the gearbox but I think the sticker on mine with the code has been peeled off -does anyone know what exact gearbox i have? Or how to find out?. Overall this is going to cst me about £2k, roughly a grand for the gearbox and a grand for labour. I'm prepared to pay it but I want to explore my options.
I'll admit - i know very little about petrol cars. I've driven electric my whole life so I'm completely unsure on what to do.

Hi, It's difficult to say, on a message board.  Certainly a grinding noise with a CVT gear box sounds bad.  These gear boxes are generally very reliable, but they MUST be serviced regularly.  If previous owners did not change the oil regularly then it could have suffered damage.  I know its too late now, but buying a car with a suspected problem is usually not a wise decision.

Your options are get rid of the car and find a better one or fix it.  If the gearbox specialist has a good reputation, then it might be worth fixing it, but if they dont, then you might be better replacing it with a better car.

Thanks so much for your advice! I'm thinking I'll get it fixed, just as there's nothing else wrong with the car. Do u know where exactly to look for the gearbox number? I'm helpless under the hood
