Intermittent CVT 'jerk'
« on: September 11, 2025, 06:15:55 PM »
For the past few months my 2005 Honda Jazz with CVT transmission has developed a very intermittent 'jerk'.
It can happen once or even twice during a journey but will not happen again for a few weeks. It feels similar
to driving over a small pothole.
Although the car is twenty years old it's had a very easy life! It's only done 73,000 miles, most of that in my ownership. It's been serviced regularly and the CVT transmission fluid was changed about 10,000 miles ago.
Is this something that I should worry about? And what is the worst case scenario? I'm worried that I might get a catastrophic lockup and end up in a ditch!

Was the CVT fluid changed regularly before the last change? I think it needs changing every 25,000 miles?

You say the CVT fluid was changed 10000 miles ago but do you know how many years that was? I think it's supposed to be done every 2 years.

You could try a tube of Xado EX120. I've used it in the past to stop CVT judder which it did for a while. When the judder came back I did a CVT fluid flush and refill (basically, drain, refill, run for a week, drain  and refill again). That was 6 month ago and the CVT box is perfect now.

I've just added a tube of Xado EX120 and the initial impression is that it has almost completely worked.
No judder from pulling away, transmission seems smoother and the occasional 'slip' is far less frequent and much less noticeable.
Will renew CVT fluid at next service interval and probably add another tube of Xado EX120.
