washer ands water.
« on: June 08, 2024, 12:27:08 PM »
I suppose that at some time, the washer motor might clog / the tube / jets may well get blocked - so would it be an advantage from time to time to put some white vinegar in the system?? as it is a cure for limescale etc on shower heads etc.

As long as the vinegar doesn't damage anything it gets sprayed on, other than the windscreen
Let's be careful out there !

As long as you use a good strength, decent brand of screen-wash solution you shouldn't need to!
I have never had a nozzle block, or the system needed cleaning out.

I live in an area with very hard water and get limescale buildup in the home   but no problem in the car  if I use screen wash solution.

In winter I use premixed  minus 20C (a good compromise on price)  and in summer I use tap water mixed with 100:1 summer screenwash concentrate.      These contain surfactants to break down surface tension and enough detergent etc to deter any algae growth.

Dont be tempted to use plain water in summer.   Or adding something like fairy washing up liquid    as it contains salts and harsh chemicals for breaking down grease etc.  Not recommended for washing the car either.

On my Crosstar I had problems with the screenwash after it had been serviced there was a build up of gel in the bottom of the container which made a mess when using the washer. The dealer said in order to get rid of it they'd have to take the front bumper off so I didn't bother and just flushed everything out and refilled with clean water, it did generally come back after a while though and was worse after each service.

Before you take it for a service fill up with your own screenwash.  That will prevent them from adding any screenwash that may react with what is already in there.

Or tell them on booking in, to leave well alone; as I do regarding tyre pressures!

Not sure that would always be passed on to the service  technicians.  I tell them when I dont want chargeable extras  . If they then do it by mistake I'm not going to pay. :P

My local Sainsburys filling station had a machine that not only charged you to use  the air line   but also had a special nozzle to top up with pre mixed screen wash.    I dont know what sort of mixture you got, or whether it was suitable for winter.  A good idea ,and saved on packaging,  but way too expensive IMO.

I always use quality -20C  screen wash

The extra cost doesn't bother me, plus trying to change summer and winter fills is a waste of time as I never let the tank empty
