Space saving wheel
« on: May 13, 2024, 11:11:58 PM »
I have a MK 3 Jazz (2020) and only have the Honda Contimobilitykit for repairing and inflating small punctures.
I would like an actual spare wheel but I think the boot space only allows room for a space saver wheel.
Has anybody with a mk3 Jazz had the same issue and can advise on best course of action. Do I also need a spacer for example?

Honda changed the design of the boot area of the Mk3 during the production run: early cars have room for a full size spare, later ones don’t. Search the forum for posts about this. That said, if you only have room for a space-saver, then that’s your only option unless you want to carry a full-size wheel in the luggage space. Space-savers are quite limited in usage, eg should only be used at low speed (<50 mph) and for a short distance, so really only suitable to get you to a tyre centre. And you have to ask yourself if you’re really comfortable changing a wheel at the roadside which can be a bit of a hairy place. If you want one then I’m sure a Honda dealer will sell you one, or there are lots of 3rd party sellers online.

I have a 2019 model, I replaced the standard glue/sealant and air pump with a space saver, wheel brace and jack bought off Ebay. I junked the polystyrene holder as it took up too much space. I do carry the air pump and a puncture repair kit as well.
There's no fastener to hold down the wheel, which I pad out with tools, fluorescent waistcoat etc. Nothing rattles or moves about. The boot floor still lays flat over it. I have two heavy duty bungee cords stretched diagonally across the boot floor panel which I use to hold things secure.
I think therefore I'm not.

Personally I think spacesaver wheels are very expensive , even second hand.  And used ones may be quite old  and may need  its tyre repaced even if its never been used. You can buy replacment spacesaver tyres but they are not cheap.  If you need to use a spacesaver in an emergency they have limitations.

If you have a full sized wheel well  I'd recommend buying a full sized spare.   (But if its used one  again check the age of its tyre using the 4 figure code on the side wall. eg  2519   would have been made in the 25th week of 2019)    A full sized spare means  you can resume your journey at normal speeds and  take a bit more time to get the right deal on a puncture repair or the most suitable  replacement tyre.

Full sized spares should fit in earlier cars  .If your mk3 has the modified  shallower  wheel well I would still remove one of the full sized wheels and see how well  it fits in the well before deciding to buy  a spacesaver.  These dont always save that much space  compared to a full sized spare, ,sometimes its more about saving the manufacturer a bit of weight and cost.  As is only supplying a puncture kit.
You may find its extra  height protrudes slightly into  the boot floor level  , but it may only be an inch or so.  You may be able to fit a false floor of  hardboard, thin ply etc  supported and leveled  underneath where necessary with timber . This may also leave a storage space underneath the floor for things like tow rope, jump leads etc.

I have a late 2019 (69 plate) with the shallower wheel well - this does not fit a full size spare steel wheel (my car is fitted with steelies and not alloys) and only just about fits a space saver spare wheel (although even then the fold down cover will not sit perfectly flush with the surrounding floor - I have resolved this by covering it with a rubber Honda Jazz boot tray).

On short every-day journeys around home, I carry the space saver wheel, but if I am taking a long journey away, I replace this with a full size Honda steel wheel and take out the boot tray (a space saver is absolutely fine for short journeys and to get home in an emergency, but for personal convenience I wouldn't want to be stuck with it hundreds of miles from home for the reasons already stated by others).

One word of caution - as already pointed out, there is no fixing point for a spare wheel in the later Jazz models and if this is left loose, it could prove extremely dangerous in a car crash (you don't want your spare wheel flying out of the wheel well). I have resolved this by fixing the space saver wheel (and full size wheel when needed) with ratchet straps fixed to the boot anchor points, surrounded by old sheets to stop it moving around (you can't see these when in use for the space saver as they are covered by the wheel well lid and boot tray).

Hope this helps.
