Some questions about buying a used Jazz MK4?
« on: January 26, 2024, 09:22:28 PM »
Hello everyone, I am currently in New Zealand and I'm looking to buy a new model of a used Honda Jazz. However, I've noticed that the inventory of used Honda Jazz cars is much larger than that of Toyota Corollas. I am wondering if there is any issue with the Jazz that leads people to sell it soon after purchasing?

People who buy a new Jazz may buy or lease it for 2 or 3 years. Also some people switched to the H-RV which is a bit larger.
There are no common technical issues, except a 12v battery that might give up when driving only shorter distances and not using the car for longer periods.

Does NZ have a large number of used imports from Japan? I read somewhere that the mandatory periodic roadworthiness test (MOT in UK, shaken in Japan) is very expensive so many owners choose to buy new when the test comes due rather than put the car through it even if the car’s been well-maintained. It would then make sense for those cars to be exported to another market that needs RHD cars, such as Australia and NZ. Wouldn’t explain why there’s more Hondas than Toyotas on the market, unless that reflects relative sales numbers of new cars in Japan.

Does the Jazz in NZ have the same 'old peoples car' stigma like here in the UK? If so, that might be why Corollas are more popular.
If it comes with some kind of warranty, has been serviced and well maintained, buy with confidence. It is a great car.

I also think some of them may be 'grey imports' from Japan.  On the Japanese market there is a big rivalry and price discounting between the Jazz and the Yaris  to attract young first time buyers, in the hope they will  remain brand loyal for life.

Japanese Government policies  encourage   new car manufacture for the Japanese market   and  exporting the surplus used, but  nearly new,  ones to neighbouring countries who also drive on the left.  In some of these countries the  buyers tend to favour  the largest and flashiest models they can afford.  So an unusually large proportion of the smaller more economical models may appear on the NZ market.

IIRC a version of the MK4 is available on the Asian market  with a conventional ICE engine.  As long as you are getting the hybrid version I dont think you will regret it.  If supply does exceed demand at present I dont think it will be long  before buyers  come to appreciate its qualities and they will be increasingly sought after.
My IQ test came back negative

I believe the answer is quite straight forward. Early last November Honda NZ offered a really good trade in deal to selected owners of of low mileage Mk4s  to encourage them into the latest model before the Govt sponsored “clean car rebate” scheme ended in December. This promotion appears to have been successful hence the glut of used Jazzes at the Honda yards.
