Radio Stations moving to DAB+
« on: December 21, 2023, 02:51:42 PM »
Here in the UK several radio stations are moving to DAB+. One of them is Classic FM, which is about the only one I listen to in the car. As the Jazz only has a DAB radio, that looks like the end of my radio listening in the car. I have seen suggestions about using a phone to stream Classic FM but I don't know how reliable that would be (and I don't have much of a data plan on my phone). Does anyone have a better idea?

I might be wrong but I thought Classic FM will continue to also be broadcast in FM   and that  the Jazz radio can receive  FM signals. There might be some reduction  in sound  quality and coverage compared to dab or dab+.
My IQ test came back negative

Mk4 Jazz Hybrids SR, Ex and Crosstar should be compatible with receive DAB+ transmissions.

Believe it or not, FM is actually better quality than DAB. The reason being is that many DAB stations have severe compression. So, if you are in an area where Classic FM is available, then tune to FM.

An Internet radio app like Radio UK should work on Android Auto or Carplay and you have a choice of all the main stations including Classic FM, but FM should work just fine, it's in the name.

I just play my music via the headunit that is now loaded on my phone, works flawlessly

Plus it mimics a USB stick in that it's FIFO and continues from where it was when I powered down
Let's be careful out there !

"Some" is an understatement.  Maybe it's an area thing but here in the wilds of East Yorkshire FM is pants.

If that was the case then simple Google searches would reveal it to be so.  They don't.

New Zealand never got around to setting up DAB radio stations, let alone DAB+ stations.
Are we missing anything?

Not really, especially in a car which isn't exactly a sound studio when you're on the move

Portable DAB radios go through batteries like there's no tomorrow, a few weeks if you're lucky. My FM radio batteries can last up to a year
Let's be careful out there !

I can assure you first hand that the Jazz's DAB radio is quite capable of tuning into DAB+ stations!
DAB (without plus) is an older technology that has largely been superseeded by DAB+.
In Switzerland we have very good coverage by DAB+ radio stations and I've been listening only to DAB+ radio in my cars for years now (no complaints about audio quality compared to FM so far - quite the opposite!).

Thank you all for your replies, and a belated Merry Christmas to everyone.

I'll wait to see if I can still get Classic FM in the new year.

I didn't think my Crosstar had DAB+ because I could find no reference to it in the MY21 online manual, only DAB.

Only true if outside the UK.  I would appear that UK models are NOT DAB+.  However, although Honda customer services were their useful self (not) and referred me to my local dealer, the latter were not able to confirm whether the radio in my Crosstar is DAB or DAB+.  So we'll just have to wait and see, or ratherwait an listen :)
