Heating the car without the AC compressor running
« on: November 16, 2023, 01:16:33 PM »
Concerns a JazzEX 2020.
I have a leak in the AC condenser, dealer is waiting for a new one ex Honda UK. Seems to be a delivery issue, have been waiting for 2 weeks tomorrow  :(. Have been doing short trips without heating, but need to take a longer trip over the weekend.
There is no refrigerant in the system and I obviously don't want the AC compressor to run as it will most likely self destruct when running without refrigerant.
So I need a sure way to heat the car without the AC running.
Would it be correct to say that as long as the 'Auto' indication is off and the yellow indicator light in the AC button is not on, the AC compressor will NOT be running? So I just set the temperature and the fan speed?
Or is there another way (or is it maybe not possible at all....).

If there is no AC gas pressure in the system, then the AC compressor will not run as it will be protected by the pressure switch, so you should not worry about that.

Your climate control system has this nice "A/C" button with indication "A/C ON" and "A/C OFF".
"A/C OFF" seems (very) clear to me...

Just switch the AC off! The heat for the cabin comes from the heat generated by the petrol engine. The AC simply chills and dries the incoming air.

I had the same problem with the condenser, fixed now but it took ten weeks to get mine fixed! The dealer had to justify it being done under warranty first then they had to wait for Honda to get the part for them, and finally I had to take it in to get installed. I think they've had to do quite a few of these, must have been a bad batch as seems to have been a manufacturing fault.

I don't think it's that simple, unfortunately.
When the climate control function is on 'Auto', the A/C will switch on and off without the yellow indicator light in the A/C button ever coming on. So there is no clear one-to-one relationship between the AC indicator light and the compressor running (or not). That is essentially the question I asked in my first post.

Indeed, but also see my response to the earlier post by Jazzik.

Maybe read the manual, page 233: https://www.honda.co.uk/cars/owners/manuals-and-guides/honda-owners-manuals/_jcr_content/par1/textcolumnwithimagem_1653971839/textColumn/richtextdownload_90f/file.res/2021%20Jazz%20Owner%60s%20Manual.pdf

If any buttons are pressed while using the climate
control system in auto, the function of the button
that was pressed will take priority
.

The AUTO indicator will go off, but functions
unrelated to the button that were pressed will be
controlled automatically
.

The function of the button that was pressed will take priority: A/C OFF is A/C OFF...

As pointed out before , automotive A/C systems  have  a pressure sensor that will not allow the compressor to run if the refrigerant level/pressure is too low.        Normally the compressor either turns  (using quite a lot of energy) or does not  turn, dependent on whether you have it switched on or off manually ,  or the automatic climate control switches it off and on.    So dont worry about settings.  The low pressure safety overides all of this. The compressor will not turn if the pressure is too low   regardless of how you have set switches.

Occasionally with a slow leak you may go through a 'borderline' situation where sometimes the pressure is just high   enough for the compressor to safely run for a while  but may sometimes drops below the threshold and the compressor cuts out again.

You will probably still get heat  (or here is always the heated seats)   but maybe not the cooling and dehumidifying benefits of A/C
My IQ test came back negative

Thank you to all of you who answered. Puts my mind at rest. Fortunately also, the dealer called yesterday to tell me the parts to fix the problem have arrived so the car is going in on Monday and then I can also desist effectively (which without the A/C and with the current weather is a bit of a problem).
