Normal I-dsi noise
« on: March 19, 2015, 08:32:27 PM »
Bought a jazz from a garage yesterday took it for a good drive today. I was just wondering what is a normal engine noise it sound slightly like a Diesel engine when accelerating but sounds fine when idling is that just the noise of a idsi as I know they are chain driven so maybe that's the noise I can hear.

With mine they can be more of type writer noise when cold and idle but quite and smooth when warm, but if this one you drove is noisy and doesn't quite down when getting speed I would advise to steer well clear might be simple repair as in tappets but it could more serious!

Well the car is under warranty so will take it back to dealer just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me who thought it sounded a bit odd. Sounds fine when idling or very light acceleration just a slight diesel like rattle when you put your foot down. I've owned a turbo diesel for past few years and wasn't expecting to her the same kind of noise from a petrol

Well I've owned my jazz since 2010 with 9k on, its now not far of 85k, now on a morning it's abit rattly until warm, this has only start in the last year. honda and private garages have informed my self that the tappets will need adjusting and well atm things are tight but been told it's not urgent due to the light rattle it makes only when cold! if it's like that I wouldn't be leaving it too long, I've been quote 110 at honda to have the work done so you shouldnt be off the road for less than 4 to 6 hours so it worth to put a days holiday in because as you know rebuilds take longer :(

It sounds a bit like 'pinking' otherwise known as pre-ignition. This when the ignition spark occurs too early but is almost unheard of in, modern, computer controlled engine management systems.
Try filling up with high octane fuel and I mean a full tank and see if the noise stops.

The tappets IF they needed adjusting would make a noise all the time,  not just under load (engine loading does not affect tappet gap at all).

its knocking or pinking or any other name that pre-ignition goes by - the Jazz 1s a high compression engine 11:1 ratio,  so is prone to pinking on 95 octane (if you look in handbook 95RON is minimum octane)  probably find that in Some Asian countries (and used to be USA, where compression ratios were typically 6.5:1 on V8 5 litre gas guzzlers and used to run on 80 or 85 octane) where even 95 is not available the engines have a lower CR to prevent knocking.  As VicW says,  fill up with 97 or 99 and noise will go away (and you will notice engine seems livelier as the ECU advances ignition to make full use of higher octane fuel)............ vehicle engines have a knock sensor on the block to detect certain frequencies of sound,  and at the first sign of knocking will retard ignition to stop / reduce the knocking -  the retarded timing has an adverse effect on performance but has to be done to protect engine from damage.

Noise made by pre-ignition will always be worst going uphill in higher gear, drop a gear and  just let the engine rev a bit more - its not a diesel (thank goodness).  BHP is torque x revs - and diesels are low revving lumps with more torque due to larger diameter crank and longer stroke due to high compression ration needed,  petrol engines have lower CR,  shorter stroke and less torque so need more revs to get same power - don't be afraid to rev a Honda engine they thrive on it - and it won't wear them out more quickly either.

here is a great article from civinfo website  http://www.civinfo.com/index.php?page=bhp

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot
