tappets?????

When listening to the engine with bonnet open it sounds like a load of crickets.Is that the normal sound of the tappets?
Should they make this clinkity click sound?
Ive had diesel  cars for the last 10 years so used to noisy engines.

Hi.

I know that Honda advise to have the tappets adjusted every 25, 000 miles so maybe this needs to be done? However some honda's dont require them adjusted. May be worth it going in for a a diagnostics.

Pre 2006 Jazz was supposed to need tappet adjustments every 25K at around £300+ per time.

After 2006 the GD checks went up to 62K (same engine with same tappet design as far as I know).

Neither mine or my wifes Jazz have ever had tappets done (with 80K and 100K respectively), and dire warnings about failed MOT's because of emissions etc. etc. never materialised - so at least £900 + £1200 saved so far.

engine should have whirring, rustling and ticking sounds at tick-over - may sound noisy with bonnet up but once in the car (as we all know) only the rev counter lets you know that engine is running !  Jazz can suffer piston slap in cold weather - but then most modern cars do because of reduction in piston skirt to reduce friction and rotating mass etc.

Thanks culzean, cleared that up for me. When first got the car I kept thinking I had stalled it coz it was so quiet when waiting to pull off. I had to keep checking the rev counter to see if engine was still running. Only here the noise when bonnet is up and engine running.

Thats a honda engine for you!!  yes, my wifes 02 jazz has never had the tappets done either and is fine... and its done over 104,000 now... these units (just like all honda engines) are built to last... just keep up with those oil changes!! oil is the engines life blood....

I'm going to check tappets on mine(80k/2002) anyway in upcoming months just for the peace of mind
Today another Jazz was passing by and I could barely hear it's engine

The only thing that puts me off is gaskets. I know that people reuse them, but I still hate the idea of discovering cracked/deteriorated one after dismantling. 10yo rubber..

Found not that much low-cost after-market options. Will probably go for BGA's ones from rockauto.com.

Funny enough it's cheaper to get British Gaskets from states then from local factors.

Some of the noise you hear with the bonnet open is actually the solenoids in the fuel injectors.
I was toying with the idea of checking my valve clearances as at idling the noise has gone from silence to I think I can hear something. I suspect I'll get round to them after another 20kmiles.

I had a new (cheap) exhaust last year and I now get a little bit of throbbing at idle. Its not as good as the original.

finally did mine 

BGA gaskets were out of stock, bought proper ones from Honda(£50)
apparently valves were done before(bought jazz this year) as rubber gaskets seemed fine and could be reused

Most valves were too loose, but it's subject of individual perception 
1/2" sockets are too wide for intake manifold nuts, ended up buying 12" 3/8" socket.

I did not notice significant difference in engine noise though

correction, it definitely got better 
I did only short lap to reprogram ecu, so did not notice any change at first
Missus spotted difference first, so I'm forgiven for wasting 1 day
