I bought this model in late 2013, a 2005 1.4 SE Sport in black. It had 85,000 miles on it at the time, at 8 years old, so about average. I paid £3300 for it back then. Earlier this year it went to scrap with 145,000 miles on it, having being driven by both my sons and one of their partners. For the last 4 years of its life it was essentially being used as a van by my younger son for his tiling business. He’s not the most careful driver and it had a hard life, hence it ending up being trashed eventually.
On average I think I spent between £300 and £500 a year to keep this car on the road, with wear and tear, service and MOT and actual spontaneous repairs, which I don’t think is too bad, given the way it was used and that I’m no mechanic so everything was done using local garages.
I see similar aged Jazz cars all the time still looking in great condition, driven by careful, mostly older, drivers. The things to watch out for are…
- rust around the rear wheel arches
- water getting into the rear and pooling in the spare wheel well
- battery is very small and can often be 'upgraded' with a better model, eg Yuasa
- hatch door handle can stick
- the original catalytic converter is a theft magnet, containing expensive precious metals, but if stolen can be replaced easily. Worth checking to see what this car has underneath.
- audio equipment is ok but tricky to replace/upgrade, being a bespoke unit. CD player often sticks. If you’re a bit handy you can fit a Bluetooth connection round the back.
Mechanically they are a very sound car and cheap and easy to maintain.
