Garmin Express can't detect my USB
« on: October 15, 2025, 12:15:23 PM »
I've done the map update process many times in the past but this time Garmin Express doesn't find the usb pen on which the cars data is loaded. I can read the GarminDevice.xml file in Libre Office so I know it's not corrupt but Garmin Express can't discover it. As this has never happened before I am at a loss to know what to do next. Any suggestions?

A few things spring to mind :

GE up to date ?
Pen formatted using FAT32 and 'default allocation units'

USB port not configured to allow the PC to put it to sleep ?

GE is up to date and the usb formatting was set to all the appropriate conditions. Not sure where to find the Generic USB Hub Properties menu, though. I assume the highlighted option should be unticked as shown?

No, by default it's set to ticked

Device Manager, and the USB hubs are down the bottom

Is it the same USB drive that has worked before? I have used and tested many dozens of drives over the years and have come across problems where specific controllers are incompatible with hosts, particularly with unknown name drives, which nevertheless will work and test ok elsewhere.

It's the same device I always use, it's not used for anything else. Windows 11 has no difficulty reading it and there are no errors reported. The USB is a SanDisk 3.2 Gen1 16Gb.

The option is definitely ticked. I had to use the legacy Control Panel to find it as Win 11 Settings seems to hide it away. GE version is 7.27.0+e0f66065. I've now tried reformatting and reloading the car data but GE still can't find it. I might have to get a new 16Gb usb drive.

Untick it to stop the PC shutting it down randomly

If GE is running on a browser try clearing the cache on the browser and/or try a different browser.

If GE is a Windows program try a reinstall

Thank you. A reinstall solved the issue.
